Cam Problems advice needed please

Featured Replies

Hi guys my skoda scout 2.0 TDi 2007 his a knocking coming from the engine

I took it to a garage who said the cam is knocking but this knocking comes and goes as in it completely goes but when it does knock its quite loud.

I did put some redex in the fuel system and have heard on here that this can cause bad knocking on some skodas, I have nearly ran the redex out now so there should not be hardly anything left in the tank now.

I mean if it was a cam knocking surely it would not come and go once knocking it would stay knocking?

cam belt was done at the correct date but is nearly due to be done again but its not quite time yet, only saying as been told also a stretched cam belt might cause this as well.

I just cant afford to go replacing things just for the hell of it 😞

any ideas please?

Are you able to get a video by any chance? Because at this point your mechanic doesn't seem too knowledgeable 😛

Given it's intermittent, it's unlikely to be anything too horrible.

yea it is weird how it comes and goes if a cam is worn then its worn surly and just just come and go can it?

will go out in a bit and do a short video of the engine sound to see if its knocking of not

Could it be your cam followers failing? When they go they do make a slight knocking, louder tapping noise.

If your engine has not had the correct spec of oil throughout its life then this can happen.

well the mechanic took the rocker cover off and said it has some slight wear in the cam and he said if am going to get a cam get the followers as well, I think he would of said if they were that bad though, still dont get why it comes and goes.

when I bought the car back in may it had a full service history

A common problem on the Scout with it's 8V SOHC engine.

Ok I have started the car up this morning and it sounds fine and drives fine and once again the loud noise I sometimes have has gone again.

I have joined up the 2 short videos the 1st part is when I 1st started it and the 2nd part is when it has been warmed up and driven for around 8 miles

when the noise comes back I will upload a video and you will clearly hear the difference I just have to wait for it to happen again

It's pretty difficult to hear it on the video through my speakers, but given that according to silver1011 cam failures on these are pretty common, it might be worth pulling apart and having a look. I actually recalled cam problems with some PD engines, but I thought it was the 1.9.

Either way, I would personally pull it apart and have a look, it's not a big job. Otherwise if you're not comfortable doing it, get your mechanic to!

yea Think I will pull off the rocker cover and check the cam myself the mechanic wanted £300 just in labour to change the cam kit and I just dont have it will try looking at some videos see if I can do it myself I have the tools its just a job I have never done before

well took the rocker cover off and been inspecting the cam for any wear and I cant feel any wear at all they all feel really smooth, cant see all of the lifters but shining a touch in there they do seem ok from as much as I can see, if they were worn would they not score the cam?

Did you see any wearing such as the one in the other post by silver1011? Did you also turn the the cams over to see the underside?

well I put my finger in to feel both sides of the cam for wear and they feel really smooth, run my finger nail across them to fill for any wear and both sides felt smooth, it was hard to see the followers (if thats what there called) as I never took the cam out, but from what I could see I could not see anything that would worry me, tiny bit of darkness but never looked pitted/worn i,m just waiting for the engine to start knocking loud again so I can take a video of the noise, will post it as soon as it comes back

You're going to struggle to see the wear on the lobes with them in situ.

They top end really needs properly stripping down and examining.

Is the noise a knock or a rattle, i.e rattly tappets?

is that what there called Lobes? is it cam rod lifters the other name? I need to start learning the proper names of parts.

I have never taken a cam or cam belt off before and i'm a bit worried If I get stuck with something like I need a tool I dont have I will be stuck as I live miles from anywhere and being partly disabled dont help.

if I was to change the lobes I would change the cam & belt as well I have put the word out looking for a maniac that will be able to do a cash job as with the parts I would not be able to pay garage rates,

I do try and manage to do quite a lot of the work myself  and I enjoy doing it but being 55 i,m used to working on older cars

Your car at 12 years old is an older car!!!

I know what you mean though, at the age of 60 I had to do the quantum leap from a 2001 MK1 to a 2006 MK2 Octavia and they might as well have been from different planets complexity wise, it was a steep learning curve and I am nowhere near the top and have just thrown myself onto an even steeper gradient with a 2015 Yeti.

keep your hand in and also your brain, use it or lose it!!!

I Am trying to keep my hand in J.R.  wish I could find a video in how to change it myself for this car

Haven't watched these but they seem related:

Sorry, not sure what you mean? Is a VW 2.0TDi the same as what exactly?

VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda engines are basically all the same - at least for a given engine code or engine family.

There are two 2.0 TDi engines. One is 8 valve, the other 16. The 8 valve is fitted to Scouts etc
