Car trying to start by itself!?!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've noticed something odd going on with my car. It's dashboard lights came on and the wiper would intermittently wipe every so often even though the key was removed and the car supposedly locked and I'm outside the car. Other times it would do this sequence and the alarm would go off, when unlocked or locked it would stop then lock out the remote, then lock out the driver's door lock. The dashboard shows no key when the car tries to start.

I hope someone has an answer.

Could it be the battery?

When you say the car tries to start by itself, what do you mean by this?

Low battery voltage or a dodgey battery can cause erratic behaviour.

Do you have a Carista or anything to scan for codes?

...At that age, the battery is most likely well past its best. Might be worth getting a new one and keeping the old one as a spare. I use a spare to allow charging to my main one, once every 3-6 months, just to make sure it gets a proper, full charge. (Charge the spare regularly, too).

Its a good starting point (Pun intended).

I pulled out the battery and put it on a battery charger overnight, so once I put it back in and dug out my Carista dongle there were 18 strange codes from all over the car. I reset the codes and checked again and no errors came up. I also went for a drive and checked later and still have no errors.

I'm not sure how old the battery is, it is a VW stamped Varta battery so maybe its close to the end of its life. However, I didn't realise how expensive car batteries are now. What is the recommended battery for this car?

The battery code as in "spec" for sizing is 012

heres one.......

The strange thing is know one seems to do an 012 spec battery with 60AH rating, not sure how they get that on this battery size, but the one linked is a VARTA anyway which more importantly has a higher CCA rating (cranking)

The other size is 027, but I think it may be to long....although it has similar specs, but again higher CCA
