Stock vRS back box on a regular mk2?

Featured Replies

It was a bad day for me today, unfortunately i reversed onto a piece of metal sticking out of the ground and split my rear bumper. (See first few photos)

To start with, i was quite annoyed. However upon closer inspection i was able to shine some light on the situation.

I have given myself two options. The first is to find a place that can repair it for me. The second option is to buy a second hand vRS diffuser and exhaust back box (see more photos) to give it a sportier look, which has been what i’ve wanted to do since buying the car.

The reason behind the second option is due to the fact that out of sheer coincidence, the split in my bumper seems to be in the exact position of where i would have to get an indent cut out of the bumper to fit the exhaust exit on the diffuser, which then means i would have to buy some sort of back box anyways, otherwise there would just be an empty hole where an exhaust tip should be.

The problem i’m having is trying to find out for definite if the exhaust in the photo i have attached For example, would fit my car. It seems to be the same shape and size as a stock 5j mk2 exhaust, just with a different tip, but i’d rather know for sure that it would fit so i don’t buy an exhaust that doesn’t fit my car.

(i have attached a photo of a stock exhaust too for comparison)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, including anyone that could roughly estimate a price to get the repair done or a price on getting it cut out & fitting a diffuser.

Fitting the diffuser is a good idea, as you say will hide the damage and improve the rear look. As far as the RS exhaust goes, it looks to me there is an extra "hanger" on the RS back box as opposed to yours. This will be due to its weight and size, so if your car body has the "hanging" point, it should fit, if not then the exhaust would not be supported enough, offcourse this also assummes they are the same diameter.

What you could do, is fit the diffuser and then simply by a tail pipe "add on" to fit the hole and save on the exhaust expense.

LOADS !!!! here.....spoilt for choice and once the diffuser is fitted, just buy the one that suits...

You could also save a bunch of beer tokens by fitting a tail pipe trim. This is a small, chrome clamp on piece that looks like a sporty pipe, without the cost and trouble. Fix the bit that needs fixing, fit the trim for the looks. I doubt you will spend more than a score on a decent looking tip.

Something like this, for instance... (EBay)
