Duplicate key

Featured Replies

We have lost one of our keys - we can’t afford the extortionate costs of getting another key - can anyone advise? We still have one key so that will have all the codes that are needed.

For security reasons, I'm fairly dure the new key has to be plugged into the car whilst the car is connected via the Internet to the main computer at VAG EU for it to be programmed for your car. Hence the high cost and the reason why car sales adverts usually boast, "with 2 keys".

Hi Hskoda, my understanding is that a new key can be coded from a working one - some (but not all branches) Timpsons locksmiths have the necessary equipment.

Ideally you do this via a VW Group workshop or a proper VAG Indie who has the licences for doing that as the missing key will get deleted and the new key coded and added to the car along with the remaining key, this sort of thing can not be done using VCDS alone.

Edit:- check to see if any of your insurances or breakdown cover include "lost keys" maybe.

Just out of interest, what is the typical dealer cost for a replacement key and the programming?

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for the replies - I was advised to come to this website as there was good advice about how to avoid the dealership prices re keys so thank you for the advice.

We have found the lost key - it's a long story and a fluke as to how it ended up where it was, but we are hugely relieved.

Well done. We will all learn the need to be extra careful with our keys, as well as ensure we have both keys if ee buy secondhand!

Something else to consider, if the car is stolen insurers ask for 2 keys to be returned to them. If unable to provide it will at the least complicate the claims process. Also my vRS came with 3 keys which was nice, I guess the insurers will start asking for 3.

On some makes and models they get data from the keys themselves to help prove - or disprove the claim. Amazing amount of data stored on BMW keys for example. Anyone know if Skoda VW Audi Seat etc are similar?  🔑
