Engine Top Up Oil Grade

Featured Replies

I know this is a big subject. Specifically, I visited Halfords to find a 1 litre bottle of oil for any top ups needed. My 1.4tsi needs very little oil adding between annual services. No idea which oil the main dealer used at the recent service.

Anyway, handbook specifies VW 502.000 or VW504.000. Searched the shelves and could not find an oil to meet both.  I'm sure in the past that the "higher" grade stuff also met the "lower" specification. As it's an annual oil change  I went with the cheapest fully synthetic, big brand, VW 502.000 at £10. Any comments?

That's fine.

Annual service is 502 anyway.  But, for top ups it's going to make next to no difference anyway.  The handbook even states you can use non VW approved oil at the bottom.

You may have mixed viscosities, but again, it's not going to make much difference on a top up.  More important that it has enough oil in it or whatever grade anyway....

Main Dealers use VW 504 / 507  (long Life) for Fixed or Variable servicing intervals.  that is 5w 30 FS Long Life.

VW 502 FS is for Fixed Services.  5w 40 FS.

It is not inferior, just not Long Life and not for Variable / Flexible Service Intervals.

I say it is superior for TSI's.  As Long Life oil can be short lived TSI's.

It is just you are not supposed to mix the oils, but some VW502 in with the VW 504 / 507 when fixed servicing is not an issue.

£10 a litre for VW502 is a bit much really.

No matter who's label is on the container.

ASDA do perfectly good oil to VW502  or VW504/507,   no idea when eventually they might have VW508/509 on the shelves.

Note this is for Variable Servicing, & the VW508 is what Skoda started putting in at the factory over 18 months back just pre WLTP.
