The Yeti and the Helicopter

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm Mark and a new member. I'm also a proud, first-time owner of a Skoda, a 2012 Yeti TDI CR170 4x4 in black.

And yes, I was first sold on the Yeti when Clarkson drove one with a helicopter on its roof.

I've always admired them on the road and a couple of years ago there was one parked next to me on the ferry from Rotterdam to Hull. I had a chat to the very enthusiastic owner who explained he'd owned two of them, loved the car and was disappointed that Skoda was discontinuing them.

At the time I was driving a fairly new Kia Cee'd (again, inspired by Top Gear) and wasn't in a position to change cars. Fast forward to January 2019 and my work situation had changed and I was driving old cars, bought cheap. One of these was a Subaru Forester, 2007 2l petrol, no turbo. I bought it because I wanted to have a 4x4 for the winter months and to easily carry all my photography gear in the back. However, that wasn't a smart move and although it got me from Glasgow to Harrogate and back easily, it was showing signs of mechanical issues. Therefore, it was time to step up and get something solid and reliable, and 4x4.

After a couple of weeks scouring Auto-trader for something in my budget, diesel, decent BHP, that didn't have a tow-bar fitted, I kept drawing a black. Then a couple of weeks ago, while driving through Glasgow, I saw a white Yeti and all my previous admiration for the car came flooding back. So, it was back onto Auto-trader and I sourced the perfect model: no tow-bar, 1 owner from new, full service history, paperwork and receipts from every MOT. service, repair or maintenance done to the car, and only about 40 miles from me.

My partner and I drove over there on Tuesday to check it out. One of the alloy wheels has a bit of bubbling and there are some age-related scuffs on the body work. However, mechanically it appears sound, it's sailed through every MOT, the interior is pristine and it drives fantastically well. So, I snapped it up with a few hundred quid taken off the asking price due to the stone chips and bubbly alloy.

It's been amazing to drive so far and I've already put a good few hundred miles on it. Last night my three kids and I took an evening road trip to the beach and back. Everyone was comfortable and the car is a dream to drive on the motorway, even in the pouring rain.

I don't have any photos yet, but I'll be sure to post some when I do. And I'm really looking forward to enjoying this forum, having spent a good few hours browsing already!

Hello Mark 👋

I very nearly bought an L&K Yeti last time around.  Probably would have if Skoda hadn't offered me such a poor trade-in on the vRS.

Still have a hankering though.

Like you I've always had old cars (end of life cars I call them), but went for something newer this time, a lot newer.

After looking at the various options that fitted my requirements the Yeti stood out.

I now have a 2016 2L TDI 148 L&K and love it.

A warm welcome to the Forum Mark !

Good first post, hello and welcome.
