Help please: lumpy idle and hesitating under load 1.2 12v

Featured Replies

Hi, son's car, 2006 1.2 12v 64bhp.

He called me on way home, started juddering on idle, lacked power and hesitating / juddering when accelerating.

Had a look. Oil was very low (and not been checked in ages- I know!!) Off the bottom of the dipstick. Took probably 1.5l to get it up in middle of marks.

Still some juddering on idle, and when under load when accelerating but get it above 2500ish the and it feels and sounds fine.

I've got a VCDS cable and no fault codes except intermittent ' catalyst system efficiency below threshold'.

I've not got it home yet or checked plugs etc, but any ideas? What to check first? Could it be timing chain wear / slipped?

Where has 1.5 litre of oil gone, assuming it isn't just leaking and forming a puddle on his drive, there has to be something else

Possibly worn pistons or valves, or leaking head gasket

If you say the exhaust is below efficiency, has the dirty oil got into the exhaust which suggests a leak by exhaust valve or manifold

You say it is a 2006 model, what mileage has it done,

If might be an expensive fix, which may be difficult to justify on a 13 year old car

When my car behaved like that it was to do with the EGR valve. I cleaned all mine after reading some of the topics to do with this on the forum and haven't had any problems since.
