Drive on the Driive

Featured Replies

My new 1.5TSI Drive arrives at start of 2020 - my return to Skoda - I suppose a VW Scirocco was a bit extreme for a wrinkly.

I tried to get 16 inch wheels on my new car but little chance prior to delivery apparently.

If anybody is taking delivery of a SE or SE Tech in Jan 2020 and in the Midlands there is the chance of a free upgrade!

SE Drive has 17" DENOM ALLOY WHEELS

SE or SE Tech has 16" ILIAS ALLOY WHEELS

(from the brochure)

We could meet up at a convenient tyre bay and do the business.

Split the fitting cost of course.

I picked up my new 1.5 SE drive two weeks ago. I'm just wondering why you don't want 17" wheels?

Mine handles great, has no real intrusive road noise and deals with bad roads and potholes without flinching.

I was hoping nobody queried my aims but here goes:

More comfortable ride
Lower CO2 emissions
Faster Acceleration
Lower Consumption
Cheaper tyre replacements
Forgiving parking for OAPs
etc. etc.

But surely if you fit smaller 16” wheels they will be fitted with higher profile tyres and will be very close to the overall diameter/ circumference of the 17” you’re taking off, so you won’t gain anything from your list apart from maybe a slight difference in tyre price.

Errr. Not all together correct Kenny

Larger tyre sidewalls do add comfort (at similar pressures) & aid kurb climbing.

In addition, tyres weight less than wheels hence, less rotational mass therefore, lower consumption/pollution with faster acceleration.

But, 16" look Fn ****e

My 17” ( 215x65x17) winter tyres for the Kodiaq have an increase of 23mm in sidewall height compared to the summer 19”s (235x50x19) and I can honestly say I can’t say they are any more comfortable.

The sidewall difference between the Octavia 17’ and 16” wheels will be 10 mm so can’t see that making any great difference to comfort either.

People should sometimes get out the bathroom scales and weigh a 16" rim and tyres & 17" with tyre and see if the difference is more than Ooo & Ahhh.

Weight a smaller steel spare wheel and tyre and see the difference of that.

Rotational mass can be a nonsense.  Try a Fat Tyre bike on the flat and compared to a regular wheel tyre bike it keeps on rolling when on the flat and moving. Up a hill maybe harder work if heavier, and what goes up comes down.

1lb x 4 corners difference on an Octavia is nothing.
