Problems with eco drive / Coasting

My RS has a mind on its own though, coasting only works a third of the time

So does mine.

No ACC here.  Straight forward driving with a DSG box.

It has a mind of it’s own.

Hence my dis-satisfaction with the way the gearbox modes works when I’d prefer a different gear mode.

So your coasting function works across the various modes?  As far as I can establish, it only works in Eco mode on our 2019 190 TDI Karoq.

I suspect it's possible to set it up to operate how you'd like it to with VCDS.

Indeed it does.

It defaults to “coasting” at every opportunity in Normal, Individual and of course Eco modes.

In Snow mode it stays in gear all the time. With “Lethargic” as it’s middle name. And heavy steering.

Manual over ride obviously tells it what to do any time.

VCDS doesn’t figure in my world.

I'm sure it could be arranged.....:)

If I recall on newer cars, whether coasting kicks in or not depends on how quickly you come off the throttle? Gentle release of the throttle results in coasting.

On my (older) car, it certainly depends on that and also it seems to depend on the road speed, plus the pattern of how hard the car was having to work before lifting off.  That will involve a mysterious combination of driving style, acceleration, engine temperature, hill gradient, cornering, wind speed, wind direction and probably more. I find it simplest not to try and work it all out, but just to let the car decide when it’s the right time to coast, and when it's not.  Any occasional economy benefits are a bonus :)
