Hello. I'm after some advice on a recently purchased 2010 Octavia 1.8tsi Elegance. 

Just before Christmas I was t-boned at on a roundabout and my VW Jetta was written off. I needed a car in a hurry and didn't do my normal research before jumping on the Octavia. It seemed to tick all the boxes...

However, and I'm sure you all know what's coming, it uses a lot of oil and there is white vapour from the exhaust even at normal operating temperature. All bad signs.

As said it's a 2010 with 74,000 miles and is immaculate. It's starts just fine with no rattles and is very quiet and smooth. Over all I really like it.

I have recently moved house and eliminated a longish commute to the stage that my annual mileage is so low so I'm almost decided to keep the car for a few years. It will take me years to get to 100,000 miles.

My questions for the forum are...

Is it worth going to Skoda and trying to get them to contribute to repairs on a vehicle of this age, or will they show me the door?

Take it to a good local independent as I'm sure they would be familiar with these engines and their problems. See what they come up with and suck it up and put it down to experience.

Huge number of posts on this. You will not have any luck with skoda uk.  Much more likely to have some recourse against the seller if they were a dealer or second hand dealer.  even privately I should of been "as described".

 

It is not a cheap fix to do it properly. Probably £3k or more at a ball park guess.   Even though it is running well now, it will fail going through that much oil.  The results  of significant  oil usage are plain to see in other posts through the years.

 

What is it consuming over what mileage.

 

Ps. what is the oil change history? Was it on variable service. That generally affects these engines badly.  I still find it a little strange that the 2.0 EA888 as in the FL vRS don't seem to be anywhere as near as badly affected.  I have a vRS with 64,000 miles and I don't always put any oil in between 8k services.  Sometimes I put in .5 - 1.0L very near to the date of the oil change anyway....

It went through about a litre in 400 miles. Seemed to do nothing for the first week and then I did a couple of 40 miles round trips and checked a couple of days later and it had gone down considerably. Oil was last changed in August 2018 and I assume it was on variable servicing.

The car was £3000 from a private seller who had the car for 2 years and the insurance pay out from my old car(which needed tyres, cam belt, battery and a few other bits) was a similar amount so looking on the bright(ish) side, it not like I'm into it for up to my neck. Yet. 

Mmm  that's out of threshold even for skodas silly 1l in 1000km boundary.

 

I'm not sure how anyone who owned a car worth a fault like this could sell privately. Sure, they may have been had on purchase too but why do the same to someone else.

 

The mk2 is a good car. The 1.8tsi is a good engine when it's set up, with latest tensioner and new pistons, rods and rings but annoyingly, it's going to cost a pretty penny.

 

Skoda and vag group are to blame but your vendor has off loaded his or her problems when they ought to not have....

I am in ALMOST the same boat, except i bought from a dealer. I am also getting through just over 1L in 180 miles!

Needless to say I have been able to take it back to the dealer, I am now trying to sort out what to do, whether to get a refund, or a substitute, I was offered a 10 plate SE, but it is no comparison, so I have turned that down.

Other than offer sympathy I am sure you're aware that it is likely the piston rings, valve stem seals of turbo. Good luck. (If it helps my dealer suggested that he thought it would be a £1600 repair, I'm not convinced though)

It has never been 1litre in 1,000 km that was an accepted figure, threshold or within tolerances..

Someone would need to find that in any VW Manual or Official documentation.

 

It was 'Oil consumption may be slightly higher in the first 5,000 km',

and May use as much as 0.5 litres in 1,000 km. (621 miles) under certain conditions, etc etc,  that is not pottering about at UK temperatures on UK roads..

They have had the same for Petrol or Diesel Engines from 44kW up, & 3,4,5,6,8,12 for many many years.

And that 0.5 litres was nonsense as VW well knew was nonsense and when in Warranty after Official Oil Consumption Tests Skoda / VW have replaced oil burners using 0.3 litres in 1,000 km.

Your on your own there. For whatever reason that is what skoda dealers use to guage acceptable usage or not.

 

In any case, this engine is over and above that so it's all academic really, not sure what you are arguing about or helping the op with? 

Not arguing. but giving duff gen like a Dealership Employee might help no one.

If you have a TPI saying 1.0 litre in 1,000 km is the threshold that would be very useful.

 

Not all Dealers and not Skoda UK say that..

& that is not a guess, that is a guaranteed.   If you have proof of Skoda / VW Dealers doing oil consumption tests and saying 1 litre use in 1,000 miles is acceptable you should be showing that to others.

 

This member got a new engine, again because he had a oil drinker.  When covered by warranty.

Gordon is a Moron that was at Parks Hamilton at the time told him the Oil use of 1 litre in 1,000 km was OK.

His car also got a new engine.

 

What some idiots like the one that did this test below do is not know the weight of 1 litre of oil.

This first ones car owner got a new engine in the car.  Just as many others have that had a car use less than 0.5 litres in 1,000 km.

 

2nd & 3rd example a Technician and Dealership taking the pith. 

 4th, the weight of oil and the Old Dynamic Oil Consumption test.   Again 0.5 litres in 1,000 km was considered and treated as excessive oil use.

 

These are both 1.4 TSI 132kw Twincharger Euro 5 engines with the Oil capacity of 3.6 litres.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot  I think we agree on this whilst we appear to be arguing about different interpretations of oil usage thresholds.  Many skoda dealers baseline 1L / 1000km but you are right, the TPIs I have seen for the EA888 1.8Tsi are 05l / 1000km threshhold.   But the OP exceeds either measure. Even at 0.5 / 1000km that is 8 litres of oil through the engine on a fixed mileage oil change regime.  That is a lot of oil. A lot of contamination, a lot of carbon build up and contamination of cat, valves etc.

 

The documents you provide just show  different interpretations of the threshold level,  but as you point out the documents are in relation to a different engine, in a different generation and as I recall had different problems in relation to injector flooding and bore wash.  Again not really relevant to the OP.

 

You mention the first document post shows you the idiots do not know the weight of 1 litre of oil.  To me is appears that they do.:

 

76 grams of oil in 300km.  That is 253.33 grams in 1000km.  Specific gravity of multigrade engine oil about 840gm / litre.  253/840 = 0.30L per 1000km.  Same as their report.

 

Again, this all seems pretty of topic for the OP immediate problem.
