2008 Fabia Mk2 Automatic gearbox whine?

Featured Replies

Our 94k mile Fabia has developed a whine/whirr which increases in pitch with speed. Local dealer suspects the gearbox might be in terminal decline and suggest trading in while the car still has MOT. Anyone heard of this or have any suggestions? Don't want to shell out hundreds on an investigation if the answer is a new / recon gearbox the car is probably not worth it. Cant afford another car so guess my only other option would be Ebay with a flag up to the suspect box and see what the car makes ???

Welcome.

I take it this is a Tiptronic gearbox so one that has no Service Schedule or guidelines for any oil changes.

The oil can be changed and at 12 years old maybe could do with that.

You should maybe talk with an Automatic Gearbox specialist that knows these gearboxes.

?

How many miles has it done?

There are threads on the subject of the 1.6 petrol and the tiptronic and issues, but not many really. In the Roomster section and on here.

He quoted the car as doing 94K...

Not that much, really for the gearbox to be Knack!

I would back up the suggestion about changing the fluid/oil at a reputable auto specialist-or at least ask them if its worth while or a waste of effort.

I have a little whine in my manual car in 1st and 2nd but thats mainly due to being a driving instructor with a car that has 15,000 miles on the clock and long ratio gears!

Drives fine and would almost certainly do with the fluid changing and perhaps the additive for such issues added, for peace of mind.

Have the wheel bearings been checked ?

"if" its def the autobox, whine is due to bearing wear, but often more common in manual boxes not auto's, new oil imo will only fix / mask it (if at all) for a short period of time.

The thing is it might well be 12 year old transmission in a Filled for life box that some were told needed changed at 100,000 miles a few years ago, but officially has no service schedule.

The noise needs diagnosed.
