New Scala Dash Cam Fitting

Picking up my new Scala this Saturday, the first job next week will be fitting my Dash Cam from my old Fabia Estate.

My question is what fuse would you use or piggyback off to get a Dash Cam that turns on with the ignition.

I managed to get a you tube screen grab listing all the fuses.

Non-Scala specific, but windscreen wiper is usually a good bet in my experience!

The rear wiper, 15A fuse is the most common fuse to piggyback off, but you must ensure it's a switched live, not a permanent live, otherwise the dashcam won't turn on and off with the ignition.

The surrounding fuses will also dictate which fuse you can use. If your Scala has electrically operated and/or heated front seats then these fuses are quite big and obstruct the piggyback fuse holder.

The rear wiper fuse looks as though it has plenty of space around it...

Be warned though, it's a mini fuse so make sure you purchase a mini piggyback fuse holder, not a regular sized one...

My guide from the Kodiaq might help a little...

My  Scala SEL is a UK model

I like my camera on the left-hand side of the cockpit. (fuse box is on the right side)

Now I have installed cameras on our last 3 Fabia's with no problems (and a few Fords)

The problem is in the top middle of the screen is the rear view mirror housing that has a air bag in it.

So it is not a simple job of pulling back the head lining as the housing has to be pulled apart

There are posts on the VW forums with the same problem and expensive air bags going off and the computer need resetting.

In the end I chickened out  went to a local certified VW electronics specialist who are happy to work on Skoda cars and they fitted it for £75 (I provided all the bits and camera)

Interesting.  Is this airbag standard SE L kit as I am also getting one and was planning on putting my dashcam in the same place only to the left of the mirror (to make the camera alerts easier to see)?!  I also have a rear dashcam wired into mine which will complicate things a bit further :(.

For those who didn't hardwired the dashcam, how did you plug it in? Or where did you placed it on the windshield?

I find only weird responses myself for these because the base of the rearview mirror is wide to accommodate the sensors, so I can put the dashcam to the right or the left which is pretty much to the side not center. Under the mirror it doesn't work since the majority of dashcams are bigger/taller so it would stick out too much.

After that, the only cigarette socket is under the armrest and the cable would be in the way, from the mirror to the armrest, not ok, not safe.

What options did you guys found - except hardwiring it? I don't really want to since I don't want to have problems with the warranty, sometimes I don't try a whole week and the battery might deplete too much.

Same here, I got my dash cam, but didn't order the hardwire kit. I am not certain if Skoda dealers in Australia will do it without any warranty problems! I'll be asking the dealership soon about it.

I used a obd adapter cable mine has been on three cars now with no problems.

It is switched to allow, On for parking and Off with the ignition Off.

Garmin offer a similar unit for about £42 or an online store cable for half that price.

I stuck the trusty Viofo 119 on the passenger side near the mirror with the pad half on the black shaded dots, the old one from mrs old car was too bulky and interfered with the sun visor going all the way forward, as my current car has a bespoke fitment camera, I put my old viofo to use.

I ran the cable along the front of roof lining, down the passenger pillar rubber (keeping clear of the airbag)  under the glove box and managed to  slip it through into the centre console to plug in the USB C with an adaptor socket, took me about 3 minutes !
