Replacing a 1.0 TSI with ... a 1.0 TSI :)

homeward, lightly laden: 4.5l/100. 62mpg. two-up, 2.6bar pressures, no attention paid to consumption, aircon on at 21C, ambient around 25C.

now heading towards 17500km. Things have settled a little, though my commute just changed so my numbers will change slightly.

I have had the experience of pulling a couple of massive trailers over the last two weeks, though, and it was interesting - first, it added around 25% to my consumption numbers (though most of the driving was in Helsinki congestion); second, the car was fine with it but it was nowhere near as sprightly as usual. That's fair enough with something like this behind you.

Second trailer was far nicer to drive than the first - not quite sure why, but whatever. The electrics worked well, no PDC, Trailer on the display, secondary indicator light showing...

Normal business sees me dropping the averages below 6l now. With winter rapidly approaching, the Aux heater has seen lots of use already and winter tyres will go on in a couple of weeks. Speed limits will change at the end of the month to 100km/h and I will try to run a couple of weeks with summer wheels at the lower speeds just to see the effect - I think it's around 1l, possibly more.

another 2k down, winter tyres are now on. With colder weather (we had snow the first three days of last week), the Aux heater is getting used and the numbers are immediately worse. My commute change seems to have been negative on the numbers, as there's literally five minutes of 50/40km/h at either end and a bunch of 80 at the Helsinki side.

Limits are still posted at 120... and so I figure the winter tyres alone make for a 0.3l/100 difference. The Aux heater is drinking quite a lot :)

Hoping to leave the car standing still for much of this week, I've done near 3000km in October alone.

24k hit on Friday outside the office.

Long term average according to Spritmonitor is now 5.97. If I do the office run and nothing else, I hit around 5.0 on the actual run, and the Webasto brings me up to 5.3 or so. That is with ambients at around 0C, moist or wet roads and 100/80km/h limits - this should be close to optimal for consumption with my driving profile.

5.0l/100 is around 12 miles per liter so 56mpg.

I note with interest the rear wiper working automatically occasionally when the fronts are on.

My 2014 Octavia also does the occasional rear wiper thing too and it is a good feature for me. Not that it has rained here in Adelaide much in December despite being unseasonally cool.

A forecast 24 C for my 'traditional' Aussie Christmas day swim. I will wait for the first clear shark spotter plane flypast before I go in though :)

I believe The auto rear wipe can be turned off in the settings.

Your excellent consumption returns continue.

My daily driver in the winter,,,,2019 Octavia 1,0 TSI ........consumes 0,56L/10km!

My daily driver in the summer ,,,,,,2007 Chrysler 300 5,7 L V8 consumes  1,4L/10km.

My" hobby"car,,,,,, 1948 Dodge 4 L straight 6 consumes 1,8L/10km.

Remember ...it is worth it!

so I hit a year old next week.

Time to take a little stock of what's happened:

 - Fuel consumption in the really cold stuff is poorer than otherwise. I saw 6.3 or so the other day going to the office with -24C outside.

 - I got two "BING!"s in quick succession last week; one for tyre pressure and then another for oil. Tyre pressure was fine, oil I dumped the remainder of the last 1l canister in. This exact thing happened at almost exactly the same mileage with the old one... 25k, oil needed. Fair enough, 0.5l over 25k is acceptable.

Just over 25k on the clock now, I'm expecting the service to be required in early March if I continue to commute like this three days a week. Pretty happy so far.

Upgrades I'm really trying to work out how to make happen:

 - more light on high beam

 - better stereo (though I have a lot of parts for this, it's not going to be trivial to find the time or funds, so I need to work on that

.. and that's about it. It works, it's pretty quiet and it does the job. Does need a vacuum out, though. Hopefully might warm up to around -5 this week and I'll do multiple cars then.

36k now. no news. One issue with the intake air temp sensor, that was a pain but fixed under warranty. Two rental Octys within a week doing my usual trip - no major changes in terms of consumption over the 1.0 for a 1.4. A little more, but not much.

Off up north this weekend with a trailer... going to be interesting. Just happy it's only 24C outside not 34.

Okay - High Beam can be improved by Phillip 120% - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-12972XV-S2-X-tremeVision-Headlight/dp/B00NMEEV9W

The MIB/Stereo system - before you junk it, try enabling up Skoda Surround and Virtual Base first - there are other thread on how to do this.  You might be surprised that you can do this on the Bolaro, Amunsden and Columbus systems.

I'm on LEDs.....  I was intending to retain the head unit, just drop a DSP on the back and some amps in the boot. I'm pretty convinced on a 15" sub for effortless bass and some nice silk membrane tweeter comps for up front (I have these in the A2 and I'm impressed considering the really nice price). I have the DSP already, just need some cabling and to work out just where I want to put everything.

Took the car up north at the weekend with a massive trailer on the back. Probably close to the weight limits on the way up with a bunch of my offspring's gear in. Averaged 9l/100km (!). Oil temps were also pushing 105-110C at 100km/h with 24C ambient. I found this quite high, but apparently up to 130C is OK.  There's minimal performance with that size of brick on the back, though - it's essentially 1m65 inside height and 1m50 wide. Was a very interesting experience. I think we might be borrowing a van next time, the fuel costs were nuts for the relatively short distances of 350km each way.

I think you are being a little harsh on Octavia's efforts. Unless the van you are borrowing is a diesel I don't think you will get much better consumption than you got towing the brick.

I have owned petrol cars that struggled to match your 9.0L/100 at 100kph without a trailer attached!

so the Octavia went in PX the other week for a Superb. There's only really one reason for the Superb: I got a decent deal on the Octy's trade-in value, and the Superb is higher mileage but relatively new. It's also a diesel.

Final numbers from Spritmonitor: 6.08l/100 over 40000kms. Not bad.

The Superb's just matched that on the initial runs to Kuopio and back and to the office, so with a bit of luck and slower speeds in the winter, I should see a 5 at the front.

Thanks for the support and knowledge, I'll be over on the Superb side for a while now :)
