Hi, had my skoda since November but have always looked to upgrade the radio unit. Not sure where to look because theres that many options.

Looking around the 200-300 price range if anyone can help.

Don’t be tempted by the cheap android or wince based ones on amazon!

although they have lots of features and are cheap, it is a lottery as to whether they will last or not.

most of them will not be the same shape or size as the one you have at the moment, as they will be designed to the smaller DIN standard, so you will need a fachia plate.

I think the best way to go would be one with apple CarPlay or android auto, as this is usually better than the software on the unit, so there’s not much point paying extra for better software when you could just get a cheaper one with CarPlay.
this is a good bet

Be aware that the Fabia has two antennas.

If you want Android or Apple Car Play better off getting the RCD330. Factory unit and under 200. :) Direct replacement.

Update

Thanks for the help. I've had a look around and considered a few avenues. Went for the Atoto A6 pro vw edition. It should just swap out the swing with not a great deal of issue. I'll let you know how it gets on if anyone is interested. Not alot of fabia radio replacements out there

I’d be interested to know what you think, I need to replace the stream unit in a fabia and a roomster

I can second being wary of the WinCe units, they are a lot cheaper but very problematic, I have finally resolved what was causing all the crashing and rebooting, when using the satnav it cannot multi-task and use the radio, virtual CD camera, reversing camera etc even if the satnav is silent in the background.

After I disabled Satnav auto start it does each of its individual functions as it should, there is no problem with the virtual CD player or the reversing camera, I only switch on the satnav now when I need it but as soon as I put the car in reverse its likely to crash when the reversing camera comes up on the display.

Also the satnav software they say is a free gift so you cant complain when it stops loading from the memory card, only €10 for a new one from China, cheaper than the memory card that it comes on but I am now on my 3rd.

Will be glad to see the back of it.

Everyone talks about Android Auto and Apple car play being essential but what the feck are they? what will they do for me that simply wants a radio with satnav built in and a decent sized display in the place of the OE head unit?

Forgot to add the the Bluetooth requires you to pair the phone everytime you restart the car.

biggest piece of K-rap I have ever bought, it does all that its supposed to do but like me cant cope with more than one thing at a time.

There are some very cheap tempting WinCE units though if you dont need the CD slot but I wont be tempted again.

Sounds as though yours has the same problems that got mine sent back.

I guess not all of them are bad, and in fact kenwood made some WinCe ones. But yeah, mine wasn’t worth the hassle.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto isn’t really much use unless you like podcasts and music in the car, as they allow some of your phone apps to run in a car-focussed mode on the display. Also, they allow you to use Waze or google maps on the system rather than the built in nav, if you prefer.

eventually I gave up and I currently have the swing back in with a tomtom capable of Bluetooth calls, and a Bluetooth Aux adapter for podcasts and music.

I would fit an RNS 315 or 510.

Got the atoto a6 pro vw model fitted in yesterday and was a pretty straight forward installation.

Hardest part was getting the GPS, WIFI and mic wires hidden and tidied away. Ended up putting the GPS and WIFI modules on the passenger door arch behind the plastic trim and the mic was the same but on the drivers side. So far I'm pretty happy with it.

The GPS is spot on in terms of the position on road and on the map. Got myself a 256gb micro sd so I can download the maps offline. Also allows me to download spotify tracks etc without worry about space.

All I have left to do is to put the two usb ports into place but I'm going to get 2 brackets/mounts so they are part of the car and the wires are hidden.

Took me less than 90 min to get it all hooked up and working which was a surprise.

Not had long enough to have a good review but so far no complaints what so ever.

Definitely worth a look at if you are after an andriod unit for your skoda
