Head light bulbs

Featured Replies

Hi 😄

I was thinking of putting these into my 2006 diesel Octavia vrs as normal bulbs seem rubbish lol! Has anyone used these ? And are they worth having?

Thanks 😊

I had to get led bulbs with the plastic removable collar so I could fit the correct adapter onto them for the mk2. Took a few purchases to get the correct adapter. I got a 2 x 55w kit. No errors etc.

Ok thanks, where did you get them from and how much please.

cheers 😁

I've used them in the past and they are pure ****e. The light is lovely and white, and there is loads on the road right in front of the car, but the total reach isn't anywhere near as good as even a **** halogen bulb. The only ones of these retrofit "H7 LED" bulbs that are actually any good are the Philips or Osram ones, and they are substantially more expensive that the ones you have pictured.

The problem is that headlamp optics are precision manufactured for a specific type of bulb, in the case of the Octavia it is H7, where the bulb is mounted in a certain way and the actual characteristics of the light source are a standardised thing. They are designed to produce a specific beam pattern based on those characteristics, which is why the headlights are great with they have a halogen H7 bulb in. But these LED retrofits, while they fit in a H7 lamp holder, do not have the same light characteristics as a halogen bulb and therefore the beam pattern produced by the optic is incorrect and usually will end up blinding other drivers because the cutoff is way too high, or will be completely useless because the beam cutoff is too low.

The Philips/Osram ones differ because they are made by reputable companies who are absolute experts in lighting design, and their LED bulbs DO have the same lighting characteristics as a halogen bulb.

The cheap LED ones I used were "Nighteye" ones from eBay, the beam pattern in the Octavia projector lens was good, with an extremely sharp cutoff in the correct place, but the hot spot was much lower than it should have been, so there was a massive bright spot about 5 metres in front of the car, and about zero light further than about 15 metres in front of the car.

Have a look at Osram Nightbreaker Laser  H7 or Philips Whitevision Ultra H7, both fully legal and decent halogen bulbs

Try the brighter halogen H7 bulbs from Osram and Philips.

They aren't going to be as good as factory fitted LED's, or an aftermarket HID xenon kit, but you will see an improvement...

Philips X-treme Vision or OSRAM Night Breaker...

Both available for less than £20 a pair, the sacrifice for increased output is a reduction in life though.
