octavia Mk1 manual gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi, My 1999 Octavia 1.9 Tdi gearbox (5 speed manual) destroyed 3rd & reverse gears the other day (107,000 miles). Gearbox code looks to be EBJ.........what other gearboxes are the same? What gearboxes can I use?

Thanks

Could you expand on what actually happened with the gears, please?

Gearbox was making a 'dirling' noise in third gear! (thought it was just a vibration from heatshield etc!). Then had no drive and gear lever would to move to any gear. Got towed home to garage. Mechanic , later, took car out (something had obviously moved during tow!) He could only get 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th-no 3rd or reverse! Took off top part of g/box and there was evidence of large damage. Now looking for replacement but confused by sellers 3 letter codes (mine is 'EBJ') Are they interchangeable and do the codes signify different ratios?

AFAIK the different gearbox variants relate to mountings, ratios, number of gears and expected loading, so unfortunately they're not 'lego' replacements for each other 😞

I found the site below which at least gives you a comprehensive list of all VAG vehicles with a given gearbox code.  I note there's a good range of Golfs and there are plenty of 1.9 tdis about.

I'd suggest contacting some of the better breakers to see if they can guide you as to other equivalents.
