Scout vs "standard" tow bar?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Is there any difference between the scout and the standard versions of the car as far as mounting a tow bar goes?

I need to put a tow bar on my scout but I don't fully trust the fitment guides used by sellers.

I don't mind if it ends up being a little higher off the ground than a standard octy (I'd prefer that, to keep the ground clearance).

Cheers, Daniel

When I bought towbars for our two 2007 Octy estates (1 standard, 1 4x4) the towbars offered were listed for all pre-FL estates including the Scout.

I can't confirm the same for the facelift version but AFAIK there were no changes to the rear chassis.

You will, because the higher towball will destabilise your trailer.

Nah bro!

It'll mainly tow a drawbar trailer, I could put a towbar a metre off the ground and it still wouldn't be any different.

Excellent, I didn't think there would be any differences, but better to ask!

FYI this is the towbar I ordered for the standard Octy but ended up fitting to the 4x4 - I compared the two and they are identical.

There are some "buggerances" involved in getting the bumper off and getting to the wiring.  I'll try to do a writeup soon but I'm off for eye surgery in a couple of hours so it may take a little while ...

I'll agree that if you mean the same thing as I would by "drawbar trailer"; one where the drawbar is free to rotate in height relative to the trailer rather than being a rigid extension of the trailer chassis.

I do indeed.

It's a moot point anyway, the scout is only 33mm higher which would have no noticable effect on any trailer.

I have found to my cost that when a single axle trailer decides to turn itself into a (free rotating) drawbar trailer its not a happy experience 😞

I have une roulotte de chantier literally a towable site hut, it has an a ring type coupling on a drawbar that is height adjustable to match the lorry/tractor/van towing it, its a splined rotating joint with a hefty clamping bolt which had loosened turning it into one of those sledges that they use for tractor pulling competitions.
