Strange electrical problem

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a 2005 mark ii Octavia (1.9 TDI diesel estate), that only two days ago had a clean MOT!

However today something odd happened - I'll give as much detail as possible.

Journey 1:

Everything normal for 15 minutes then suddenly the green dash illumination went out, along with the green headlamp symbol (the headlights themselves were fine).

At the same time the "ASR off" button illuminated and the ESR symbol (amber skidding car) came on the dash.   At all this I was doing around 40.

Finally, the indicators were very sluggish (odd and prolonged gaps between each 'tick') and the windows seemed slow too.

The dash illumination and headlight symbol continued to flash on and off periodically, but not consistently.

Driving wise no issues at all with lights, braking etc.   Starts fine (fairly new battery and starter motor in 2019).

Journey 2:

Again no issues starting and no warning lights for first 5 minutes.

Dash illumination and headlamp symbol fine; no more flashing.

After 5 minutes, "ASR off" came back on as did the amber skidding car.   Nothing else to note though.  All electrics, eg indicators, fine.

After 30 minutes at the end of the journey, the dash illumination and headlamp symbol did go off again but only when turning a corner and also using the indicators.

And that is it.

No other warning lights, no starting issues.   The headlights themselves are working and bright.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It could be a simple thing solution, but preferably an autoscan of your car would be much needed in order to  see any faults.

Thank you.

As a slight update , journey 3 (the journey home):

All was fine unless I needed a big left turn (i.e. a turn or two of the steering wheel, such as at a roundabout).

When doing so, the dashboard lights died (except the ASR and amber car, which came on), as did the wipers, indicators and rear window heater.

The headlights themselves stayed on and the radio and blower worked.

Restarting the car solved it... until the next big left turn.

Problem with the clock spring.

VCDS scan will reveal all.

Hi again.   Thanks for the replies both.

Being Sunday yesterday I didn't get to do much, but I did just check all the fuses and relays were fully in place, as were the battery terminal.

Perhaps I imagined it, as the movement was very slight, but it did feel like one relay pushed back into place and had perhaps been *slightly* loose.  Then again the movement was so slight I might also have imaged it!

Either way, the problem did not reoccur today at all.  Everything was fine.
