2011 1.6tdi in limp mode and breathing from filler cap

Featured Replies

Hello I have a 2011 1.6tdi Roomster which was going into limp mode, also difficult starting.I've had the egr replaced now it starts ok and passed the MOT.The thing is the limp mode still comes on after a short drive and a mechanic says the engine is breathing and smoking from the filler cap.The car has done less than 90k miles. Can anyone please advise as what might be the problem, thanks in advance Nigel.

Which filler cap? If this is the oil filler, you could have a crankcase pressurisation issue, which would stem from blocked breather hose(s) or worn cylinder bore(s).

Thanks for your reply.Have these engines got a reputation for bore wear at this mileage or is that the less likely scenario ?.

what codes come back when its in limp mode?

As having a wallet unconnected to both the bill and the works, I was listing every cause of the symptoms quoted that I knew. Bore wear is the less likely scenario.

I am waiting on a response to the codes question from the garage. The guy said it needed a new engine at £2000 plus fitting hence the request for help from you guys. Thanks Nigel.

Unlikely unless bore wear is proven by a dry and wet compression test. It's much more likely to be a blocked crankcase breather (which costs more than the compression test, but is probably under £200 even in SE England.
