Strange smell when reversing

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed a musty smell from heater vents when reversing, it’s like the a/c needs cleaning but only smells when in reverse, Superb estate 2016 2.0L Diesel se business

If the reverse is uphill it could be the clutch that stinks, lots of cars suffer from this on uphill reversing or when trying to shift a big caravan backwards - even on the flat.

No it’s not a clutch smell and it’s even when reverse parking etc nothing strenuous it’s wierd

When you select reverse the hvac unit goes into recirc mode to prevent exhaust fumes entering the cabin. So perhaps it does need cleaning as it won’t be drawing outside air to dilute the smell.

^^^ As above.

A 4 year old car so by now 2 pollen filter changes should be expected to have been done.

But not just pollen filter changes, wash and clean around that area where the filter goes also an anti-bacterial clean of the system.

Kenny R that sounds very feasible, maybe  an air con bomb and new filter needed, thanks I’ll give that a try

Do you have your a/c on all the time?

Penguin17, not all the time but quite often , two three  times per week it’s used

Ah ok. I personally would just leave it on all the time. Stops build up of bacteria and prevents the seals from drying out. HVAC systems no longer hinder performance/economy like the systems of old.

Best that some do not use the methylated spirit as a highly flammable liquid and vapour and some people are just not the brightest.  Well unless alight.

Would love to know how to replace the pollen filter on RHD cars if anyone has a "How to?".

I think you drop the glovebox all the way down and it's behind it. Might be wrong though 😁

Hey did you figure out the mouldy fridge smell when reversing

When reversing intake flaps close so your ventilation is different from when moving forward.

Service the AC / Cars air intakes.

Fresh Pollen Filter, clean / disinfect the area, intakes etc. Be sure there is no mould / bacteria about.
