Ebay bargain for someone...

Featured Replies

I have NO affiliation to this seller - I was just browsing Ebay and found this for sale. It's a 2016 petrol Octy VRS with 38,000 miles on it for £7995.

It's registered as having a damage marker Cat S - but looks to have been repaired nicely. I just thought I would post it up, in case someone would like a Mk. 3 VRS, but is on a budget. Looks like it might be a little bargain, no?

Bargain if it's decent.

The thing that shouts that it's not to me though is the MOT is until march 2020.

Who on earth tries to sell a car with less than a month's MOT?

Surely they'd just pay the £45 and slap a new one on there.... a car of that age should sail through.

Unless they think it's going to fail.

I didnt know what Cat s was so Googled -

for short — is a description used by insurance companies to describe the level of damage to a vehicle they have written off. A Cat S vehicle has specifically suffered damage to its structural frame including its chassis, probably in an accident. ... Insurers often sell Cat S vehicles on for salvage

I certainly couldn't tell if a car that had suffered structural / chassis damage had been repaired nicely or proffessionally.  As above, with a months ticket left surely they would stick a new ticket on it?

How much cheaper is this than a normal non Cat s ?

Car passed it's MOT on 1st march 2019 when it had covered 36,000 miles. If it's covered just 2000 miles since that suggests it was written off in the last year, someone has bought it, done it up, hardly driven any miles in it and now passing it on to make a quick buck.

The phrase, 'wouldn't touch it with a barge pole' springs to mind.

I'm not saying avoid Cat S cars, but what I am saying is if you're going to buy one, make sure it's had decent use since being repaired.

I say if you are going to buy one then repair it yourself and keep it!

It is definitely true that many things may crawl out of the woodwork in the months and miles after the repair, also short cuts being taken on the repair, very tempting to patch up broken pieces of plastic that are not visible when fitted like headlight mounting lugs.

May not have been driven at all since repair, as don't know what mileage was when it crashed (and hasn't been taxed since 3rd June 2019).  The tax checker website also shows logbook issued 11 Sept 2019 so presumably that is after current owner acquired it.

Actually has less than 2 weeks MOT (MOT checker website says tested 1st March, expires 9 March), so I would be very suspicious as seller hasn't had a new test done, which would have allowed it to be advertised with MOT to 9 March 2021

I didn't do any detective work like you guys when I posted that link - err crikey, yeah, maybe steer clear! :D

If the lack of an MOT is a deal breaker then I'm sure it could be factored into the deal before agreeing to buy it.

If it passes, great, if if doesn't then you don't have to go through with the sale.

I actually ran a check on this vehicle as I am after a petrol vrs and ive been looking at A LOT of vehicles and am open to all. current owner has had it for 6 months, was a write off in may/june time with driver side damage. doors and rear wing and rear bumper but also the sill is bent. I also have no proper idea if a repair is good or bad but the though of the chassis being jigged due to side impact put me off. interestingly the interior was the silver coloured but the pictures now show the red detailed one.... bit random considering the interior in the salvage pictures is untouched! 6 months ownership and no new MOT

if anyone is interested in this though please let me know and ill make the pictures and records available to you, save you a few quid.

this ones not for me though.

How'd you get hold of the post damage / pre repair photo's?

Could deployment of the seat air bags or seatbelt pre-tensioners have necessitated the interior swap I wonder?

I paid for bundles on vcheck and they show you the salvage records if applicable to any write off that go through auctions. Theb I compared them to the listed ones on ebay. I've been looking at tonnes of cars lately

Id want to see the wheel alignment readings to see if it had been repaired correctly. Id also give it a thorough going over and get it checked by a mot/accident repair garage to check for any issues.
