Alternator belt wobble at idle speec

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’ve had some chirping noises from the alternator belt which originally occurred when the steering wheel was turning whilst stationary or at low speed. It was suggested that this could be down to alternator clutch slipping whilst under load (due to extra draw from steering motors whilst vehicle was idling). However this has now developed into a full time noise being generated by the tensioner pulley vibrating whilst the vehicle is idling. This stops when the revs are increased but there is obviously a problem somewhere in this area. A worn or dirty belt was a suggested cause but I’ve taken some pics with an inspection camera and all appears ok. Historically, the air con has never been fully cold on a hot summers day, as this is part of the drive train, could this potentially be a cause. Apologies for the long post!

1. Check if your alternator is fitted with a one way clutch pulley. If it is then.....

2. Check if its seized. Remove aux belt. Whilst holding alternator rotor, check the pulley can freewheel in reverse rotation and engages in forward rotation.

Was a common problem on diesel engined cars in the past. One way pulleys can be replaced, cheaper than a new alternator.
