mystery wobble on backend

Featured Replies

Hi

I've started to get a wobble sensation to the rear of the car, almost feels like a buckled wheel but they are only 2 weeks old, and this was happening before the new wheels,  you can feel it slightly around town but it really comes to life on the motorway, I've taken it to my local garage and the mechanic had a run on the motorway with me, he's says ite the high speed dampers not doing their job, and the only way I would cure it was to fit adjustable shocks, but I'm not convinced as it happens all of the time on every type of road surface, (good or bad), I'm no mechanic, but is it possible I've bent or buckled a stub axle, any serious suggestions would really be appreciated, thanks in advance

Worn out rubber suspension bushes would be my first check.

Hi micmac

My mechanic did a wheel alignment check and said that was spot-on, but also said at the time that the bushes were wearing,  but not enough to fail an m.o.t in his opinion, so do you think that could be the problem?

Static alignment and wiggling by hand isn't telling the full story like when the full weight is on the wheels. if they look suspect and handling is affected you'll need to investigate further.

So you are saying that simply replacing the bushes isn't going to solve the wobble? Or there is something more causing the wear?, Sorry for trying to clarify, I'm not a mechanic

I'm saying that most likely the sensations you are feeling are due to thus far undiagnosed worn bush(es) causing the rear wheel(s) geometry to get out of shape during driving with the shifting loads, think rear wheel steer forklift.

It could be a damper(s) that is shot allowing the car to bounce around, no need for adjustable ones though, just OE spec aftermarket items are fine and less expensive than genuine VAG parts.

You need to have a pro check it over.

@ambrymann I would get a second opinion and as MicMac says, a pro to look it over.

I see your location is Nottingham.................If you are local enough then I highly recommend Wilford Lane Autocentre, not far outside of Nottingham itself.

Good at what they do and I have never had a cause for concern of unnecessary work or being overcharged, and if you ask the questions they will explain stuff to you.

I'm no mechanic either but i suspect if you do as your mechanic says re the adjustable dampers, you may find the issue is still there afterwards.

Have you tried rocking the rear end to see if you feel / hear any unwanted movement or noise ??? or tried just pushing down on the rear to see what the dampers feel like???

Are the wheels and tyres 'brand new' ??? and good make ??? What type of alignment check was done ??? 4 wheel ???

Hi tilt

Thanks for the info, had a full set of Avon zv7 about 2 months ago and the wheels are AVA Phoenix,  they are 2 weeks old, had a 4 wheel laser alignment done with the new tyres, but this has been going on since before the tyres and wheels that's why I'm happy to rule them out, the shocks themselves are Munro and only 12 months old, that's why I was asking for any more inspiration, I think I will get the bushes checked out seeing as my mechanic did say there was wear on them, I'm Hucknall side of Nottingham so wilford is a little far out for me but thanks for that recommendation anyway

Hi

Sorry I forgot that bit, I've tried pushing down and rocking but all seems to be doing as it should with no knocks or squeaks
