Out of UK - car tax

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, if I'm taking my car out of uk in Europe for a couple of months maybe so I'm trying to find answer to the following question, do I still have to pay car tax in UK or I can amend it for the moment?

Thank you!

?

When do you plan to head across the English Channel, and are they allowing you in?

You have to have it legal, so for your Insurance that will be valid / current VED.

No MOT test required in the UK if it had a valid test at the start of April.  How that will be in Continental Europe / some countries who knows if the MOT is out.

Well, the car is not in UK now and it will stay out in another Europe country, so that's why I was wondering for insurance purpose only. But in the policy they say you need to prove, in case of a claim, proof of road tax in current country you're in, which in my case, I'm paying as well. That's why I want to know if I can cancel the UK one as I'm not driving on UK roads.

Nothing clear in there when abroad

Seems pretty clear on it having to be taxed.

?

What are the rules in the Country you are paying tax in and what does your Insurer say about not being Taxed / VED paid in the UK?

Your original post said "if I'm taking my car out of uk in Europe for a couple of months maybe" which made myself and Roottootblowinootsoot believe that the car was in the UK and that you were going to take it abroad and my link clearly stated:-

UK law still applies to a UK-registered vehicle if you take it abroad for less than 12 months. That means you need to make sure:

your vehicle is taxed in the UK while it’s abroad

you have a current MOT

you have insurance

You’ll also need to make sure you meet any international or national conditions for licensing and taxation.

If your vehicle still UK registered then I believe that you have to comply with the UK law and keep it taxed, MOT'd and registered whilst it is abroad. I am very confused when you say that you are paying road tax in the country that the car is in. Can you please clarify?

If you are worried about the insurance implications then I can only suggest that you contact your insurance company and ask them

Roottootblowinootsoot beat me to it!

All the lines are so busy right now everywhere, first I tried to contact DVLC and after my insurance company but I can't reach them.

Well yes, should be clear then that I have to keep it insured...

What I wanted to say about that I'm paying road tax in the country I'm in is that the vignette is mandatory here when driving on the public roads, like UK car tax is.

What country are you currently in?

Romania

I may be wrong but as far as I can see from the internet the Romanian vignette is for the privilege of using their roads and applies to both Romanian and foreign road users. Romanian car owners also appear to have to pay an additional annual Car Registration Tax depending on engine size and locale which appears to be similar to the UK VED. I assume that your car is not registered in Romania and therefore you are not paying their Car Registration Tax.

We have to pay for vignette, which is road tax, and yes we have additional anually tax which depends on car engine size.

The car is registered in UK and

The UK treasury needs all the money you can contribute.

You just keep paying in and when your car comes back everything will be lovely with very empty roads.

Good to know, in that case I will register it here.

I've not read any of the links but would think that to register the car in Romania, you'd need to alter a few things such as the lighting system. Normally these things only need doing IIRC after a certain length of time out of the country.

Yes the lighting system needs to be altered prior to registering, but that's not a problem.

If you register the car in Romania will you have to unregister it in the UK or SORN it?

If you don't when you return the car to the UK the the DVLA may want the VED backdated to when it ran out. Also your insurance may be invalid as the registration number of the car will change when you register it in Romania.

Is it worth all the trouble just to save a couple of months VED?

When registering the car in another country, you have to inform them about the permanent export and then you do insurance in your own country.

@cclaus

Is there any reason not to have the car Registered in Romania, or is the plan for it to be back in the UK before 12 months pass since it left?

It's the only reason, I might return to UK
