Octavia Vrs diesel

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I currently own a limited edition 2009 grey petrol vrs which has very low and genuine mileage of 42k. I often joked with the guy at my work about how much I prefer his colour which is race blue. Well the other day he offered it to me but it has 184k on the clock but is dieasel. It's a 59 plate so has caught the face lift. He has covered 60k in the vehicle. Obviously this is the other extreme from my petrol low mileage. Is there still potentially still plenty of life left.... It does have the P2015 dash light. Thoughts would be welcome.. Its more of a project car.

Is it to replace the LE or to accompany it?

If you're thinking of replacing the LE then you're mad!

The pre-FL looks better (personal opinion), it's a petrol vRS (some might argue a diesel engine doesn't really belong), you aren't seen as the enemy in the eyes of the government by running a dirty diesel, and it's done miniscule mileage compared to your mates car.

Sure, the other car is Race Blue, an awesome colour but that alone is definitely not worth the swap. Even a meticulously maintained car on 190,000 miles will be heavily worn. You're firmly into clutch, flywheel, turbo, EGR and DPF issues at that mileage. Even it's already had some of the work done, you won't be far off needing them doing again!

Finally, given the low mileage on the LE, is it fair to assume your journey's are quite short? Never good for a diesel and suicide in a diesel with fast approaching 200,000 miles under its belt.

What number is your LE? Do you still have the original alloys on it? Get the old girl registered here...

It's no. 273 yes it still has the original wheels. As it happens the LE was always something I wanted as a company car but the time to change didn't coincide with when they were issued. I bought the car from a family so know the mileage is correct. I've since changed jobs and now do a 40 mile roumd trip. Whilst I do agree with your petrol vs diesel comments money talks and there is better mpg and tax is cheaper.

Ultimately the plan was to keep the miles off the grey LE and use the blue one. I wanted to tidy the blue one up and run it for a few months. Also like the idea of fixing the management light.

Try not to get sucked in to the misconception that diesel's always have to be cheaper to run once your mileage increases.

The lower price of petrol cars to buy, the fact petrol is cheaper at the pumps and that they're not burdened with complicated and often problematic emission controls systems (EGR, DPF etc.) means that unless you're doing in excess of 15,000 miles a year, probably closer to 20,000 miles these days, then a petrol car can be cheaper to run.

I never quite understand the tax argument either, what are we talking £30 on the LE versus £150 for the diesel, so a difference of £120? That's two tanks of petrol, across a full year, essentially a rounding error on the total costs of running a car.

If you're looking to buy the diesel as a bit of a project / fun, then go for it, life is to short.

If however you're trying to justify it to the wife based on it being cheaper then I think you're potentially in for a tough time a few months down the line :D

Not worth it in my opinion.

I have a 2011 VRS diesel I probably do 15,000 a year in it and it’s currently at 151,000 miles.

Doing that sort of mileage is great and it’s spent most of its life up and down dual carriageway and motorways so it’s not been stretched and I’ve never had DPF issues as a result. I probably get 500 to 550 miles out a tank and it’s always BP ultimate diesel that I use.

For me it works great and I wouldn’t get that mileage out of a tank of petrol but we are only talking 100 miles extra max because it’s a diesel.

if you were changing the car to a brand new model then it’s worth it just because of the leap in terms of technology and innovation.

Driving a diesel with only a 2.0 engine and low power isn’t exciting!

Yeah I do see all your P. O. V.s  The thing is he has said I can have it for 1k. And I am thinking of running it for a few months to see what happens. It needs a little work I was going to cheer the wheels up and spray a couple of stone chip areas. The thing is the le having only covered 42k is a bit of a victim of its own success. Most 2nd user covers have covered this. I don't want to add the mileage to it but with respect it is an octavia not a Ltd edition lambo. It is only one of 500 and with that low mileage it somehow makes it feel bit special.

Out of Interest in these times of finincial restriction gonna do the oil and filters my self. What lonlife oil would you recommend....... For the petrol vrs.?
