Why is Webcam communications so poor in the UK?

Featured Replies

This is a serious question.

I am watching the MP's 'Live Science Select Committee' on Sky.

The pictures coming from those taking part is pathetic.

?

Is this as good as these MP's and others can get provided from Tax Payers money and maybe their own money?

It is pretty poor in this day and age if this is as good as it can get.

Maybe @Aspman  could help me with some reasons why it is as bad with so many professionals, journalists, medical people and scientists equipment.

It's usually bandwidth on the network. If they are sharing wifi with 50 other people the software will drop the quality until it gets something it can maintain without dropping out. The MPs will be working from home so they'll have kids on xboxes and Netflix streaming at the same time.

Same if the quality of the feed is poor (plenty of bandwith but lots of errors).

If they're using Zoom (which they shouldn't be now) it might be that it's just not very good. Which is what I've heard anecdotaly.

What really brought it to my attention was the Westminster Science & Technology Committee members and those assisting them via Webcams having such crap systems.

That leads me to wonder are they worth paying any attention to if they can not communicate with sound and vision in sync.

You can  get better communications between earth and outer space than across the UK.

Contention is the issue. If you have the best setup in the world it still won't work well if 10000 people around you are doing the same.

Some of these MP are probably off in the country in their 3rd homes running off their mobile phone signals which might not be great either.

Zoom does 720p HD as standard and it can work over a reasonable 4G link (I’ve had to do it).

A few might be bandwidth, but I would blame a lot more on the terrible quality on webcams that are built into most laptops.

That along with the average age of many laptops, way beyond 4 year sensible life, means some people might even be pushing on with as low as VGA quality cameras.

Your average home WiFi set up leaves a lot to be desired too..
