Vrs! Servicing

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever took there Vrs to Halfords for major service and are they any good?

I took it Skoda last 4 times but now it's at 10yrs old they don't really want to know. Only what money they can screw.

'AVOID'.

Find a VW Independent or someplace you can trust.

What does your car need?  Are you needing the spark plugs replaced, the pollen filter, the air filter, the brake fluid changed?

Brake pads and discs checked etc?

?

What miles has it done, what servicing has it had the last 4 times?

Is it still running the original water pump and the 2 belts?

I'm looking to get my vrs serviced in the next few weeks.had it almost a year now so the first time in charge of the servicing will probably go with autohaus (vag specialist) in Edinburgh heard they have a good reputation or as root says get some one you trust

There is also AVW in Embra, I've used them twice for jobs.

The car needs oil, filters and spark plugs. All brake discs, pads, fluid were replaced last year when it had a minor service. Going with the schedule it is now due a major service.

Everything on the car is still original even the exhaust. Apart from consumables I've been lucky.

I will avoid Halfords being as tho it's a specialist car. Lol.

Has anyone used Vrs Northampton before?

@TopRavr

Don't get tied up in the Minor / Major service thing.

You need a service and spark plugs replaced by someone not handless.  The DSG is not getting touched, or the timing chain or the brakes,

and you can check the air filter yourself and change if needed, the same with the pollen filter, and if fine give it a vacuum and clean / wash the area.

Learn how to do it yourself, much more satisfying, you will take more care and have a sense of achievement.......and offcourse it's a lot cheaper.

As an example, I did a guide here for doing the spark plugs, overtime will add lots more jobs, routine as well as faults and fixes.

These cars are the easiest cars  I've serviced in my life.... Literally, Even the most unconfident person could do it.

Oil filter is in front of your face when you open the bonnet, C- Clamp, a chain or a £5 filter tool to remove and replace, jack drivers side front up to get at the sump to drain the oil.

Air filter is only a case of a few hex screws.

Again a £5 tool from amazon/ebay to remove the coils to get into the spark plugs.

You'll kick yourself when you realise how easy it is.

Plugs, fuel filter, oil filter  and oil every 12 months.

Had to change the coolant twice as radiator went then Fitted and then fitted an uprated intercooler, brakes fluid was done 2 months ago as my caliper decided to seize on😂

@Madvlad65

You could look at what the Manufacturers recommendations are.

Brake fluid first at 3 years then each 2.  You can test for H20.

The Spark plugs are at 40,000 miles, but one might not last 10,000 miles or might last a long time, but then that depends on lots like the software.

Every 12 months is not telling anyone much if a car might only do a few thousand miles a year and not be inclined to fouling plugs or cooking one.

The Air Filter was at the 2nd major service so at 4 years or 40,000 miles,  but then that depends on use / location / countries conditions.

Pollen filter was a 2 years, but then you can check as required.

Alarm siren shows on Service books from cars that had them as being at 5 years.  Plenty cars 10 years old might still be on the original.

Basically it all depends on what is needed in the way of where you are, how you drive and what you do as preventative maintenance and regular checks.

Should have said I base mine on doing around 5-6k a year in mine of hard driving.

@Mickmartin  When you remove the plugs are all 4 in good condition and the gap the same as when fitted?

Is it the original NGK from 2009-2011 you use or the ones Skoda / VW changed to and are you running them at 0.8mm or as they revised that to 0.7mm?

Just had a look through service history looks like fuel filter and brake fluid never been done.spark plugs have done 23300 miles. (Changd at Skoda dealer) oil _ air filters done regularly .so off to a vag specialist.  it's not something I could do mickmartin😀👍ps.i only do about 2500 miles a year and drive like miss daisy 😁

Changing the spark plugs is pretty straightforward and the guide by @UrbanPanzer is a great help.

Which really leads to the question of why so many VW Trained Technicians  or Fitters have messed up so many spark plug changes over the years that required people to ask here what was wrong and the EPC light or Exhaust Emissions light is on after they collected the car.

Mostly it is a breather pipe not replaced or the O rings not correctly in place on the Turbo pipe.

Not seen a post recently with anyone having the issue, but then maybe they never had the plugs changed at Main Dealers.

They are messed up most likely because the cars they service don't belong to them, hence my point if you do it yourself, or someone you know / 100% trust does it for you, you then know it's right and you can trust them to take care.

I never have or never will put a car I own into a dealer, well I have done it once actually in 26 years of driving................then I got the bill and swore never again.
