Which performance diesel or petrol?

Featured Replies

When I say performance diesel/petrol....... not talking from handling perspective;  as looking for reasonable load carrying with a straight forward 0-60 sub 6 seconds.

Thoughts on:

330d touring, 335d touring, Audi A6 Bitdi 3.0 etc

Have looked at Audi S4 saloon but it felt a bit cramped, plus it was 2017 with newer engine (not fully proven). Want around 30mpg or better.

Initial budget Up to £20-25k - cheaper the better.

Or anything not so obvious - open to suggestions (Subaru)? 👍

A 335d x-drive touring.

Audi A6 Allroad (272) 3ltr tdi not the Bitdi version.

Seen a nice looking 66plate with 44k miles from main dealer for £23.5k (obviously negotiable 👍)

My biggest fear other than general high expense of Audi main dealers service  is if the Air suspension plays up outside any warranty or should I be more worried about something else?

Any thoughts or real world experience?

Passat BiTDI 240PS is worth a look.  I test drove one and was mightily impressed.

Plenty of space, proven mechanicals and a nice interior.

Golf R estate.  Deceptively big boot, IIRC more volume than the A6 avant.  Basically anything made by VW group, in an estate body, with Haldex and fitted with an EA888 engine should be fast and big enough and return >30MPG. e.g SEAT Leon Cupra ST, Skoda Superb 280.

...or for something completely different....Volvo V60 Polestar.  Great car but the interior is a little dated and not the biggest of estates but it's very comfy and quality is superb.  They changed to a 2.0T in '17 (ish) so the running costs aren't too bad and it gained some BHP too. (and IMO 'Rebel Blue' looks amazing!)

I desperately wanted one a couple of years ago but my local Volvo dealer refused to budge on the woeful p/x price he offered for my car.  Ended up in a 280 Superb.

Has anyone mentioned a Superb 272 hatch with a stage 1 remap. Potential 170mph top speed, 0-100mph in 10.46 seconds, quarter mile at 110mph in 12.52 seconds, over 48mpg or 600 miles on 66 litres of unleaded (99 octane) and a 625 litre boot to dispose of stuff. I rest my case and room for 5 large adults with room to twirl a cat inside (only toy versions of course).:thinking:The thinking man's Mercedes S-Class.

I'm hardly going to disagree. I can't speak highly enough of mine.

I think it must be one of the best all round cars in the world. Sub 5 sec 0-60, 4x4 and can still get 40+ mpg (don't believe the paper figures not a chance, 54mpg my arse 🤣). I've had mine 3yr and my only real moans would be the diamond cut wheels (I think cut alloys are always a problem waiting to happen though and I'd had mine powder coated now) and the integration with my Android phone (it works but it's clunky newer models might well be better).

They are quite well specced by default. the Xdrive rides higher so if you want the option of a sporty drive you'd need to look for one with adaptive suspension. Bimmer owners seem to think it's soft as standard but I think it's about perfect.

Needs MSport brakes (blue calipers).  I don't have them and wish it did. It's a heavy car.

TBH I like to change my car every few years and I really am struggling to think what to replace this with. If you need more space there is the 535d but that's not the bargain that the 335d is.

Been making some enquires on a 335d Touring, 2017 well spec car: has M sport suspension & brakes, full LED adaptive lights, Head up display with speed signs, reverse camera.....with 45k miles 1 owner.

See how it pans out in the current climate 👍

@Defenderben

Pay particular attention to the brake discs and see how they are looking and if replaced or needing.

Tyres as well, how the wear is on them and no uneven wear at the front, & what the tyres are that are on now.

& is the BMW Servicing Main Dealer history all complete.

My car is on 58k and due brakes all round. Most of my miles are motorway so unless your 45k had done the same it might well be due the same. Brakes from main dealer are expensive.

It says full BMW service history; unfortunately the tyre/brake images are not good enough, to determine much. It’s a couple hundred miles away from too 😢

If they come back to me with some more info, I will ask for close ups of discs and each tyre including the full tread width.

Good on the FMDSH,  but check on how many miles until the next service is due if one is.

Has the car had it's first MOT now?

First registered March 17, so think it’s just before the 5 year prestige vehicle tax of £325 a year or whatever it is at the moment.

I have requested the vehicle registration so I can run some checks etc, as the advert has them covered, which is a pain but avoids cloning.

Oh and last serviced @ 42k

Even the 330d is a weapon not mind the 335d

i had a 330d and when i had it mapped it felt quicker than the old boys 335d probably cause it has the shove of one big turbo rather than 2

@BigJase88  What was it standard 254 bhp, and what was it mapped to?

Was it actually quicker or did it just feel quicker?

Makes a difference to who gets up the road like they stole it.

It was the older M57 232bhp standard iirc, mapped up to 270-280bhp area. The old boy had the N57 335d 280bhp iirc.

i think because it had the one turbo it was more boom massive power when the turbo kicks in whereas the 335d has the twin turbo so it more linear in it’s delivery.

who knows what was faster i would imagine they would of been about level pegging.

The 308 bhp 335d is different then.

Yeah that would be the newer one. This was E90/91/92/93 time

i did have a go against the F30 330d in a mapped E92 330d and the mapped E92 had the legs on it

The 335d x-drive with a remap ups the game again.  It just goes on and on.

  Longer than the tyres do.

My mapped E92 was burning the rear tyres in 3k miles 🤣

oh i can only imagine a 335d x-drive. Will be an absolute weapon. Even the old one was a weapon.

Glad my tyres last longer than 3,000 miles. After 9,500 miles my 360bhp Superb should be good for 20,000 per set of 4.:whew:
