Price increases

Featured Replies

Skoda were due to increase price of cars tomorrow but I now see the brokers have updated their prices to reflect the change.

Given this is the Karoq section, I thought some real-life figures might be of interest. I took delivery of a 1.5tsi DSG Edition in December 2019, exactly 5 months ago ( when Skoda were running a £1000 extra discount offer ). These are the price differences according to the same broker.

total drive away price Dec £30430 and today £31475

total discount (saving) Dec £5791.40 and today £4872.40

Discounted Price Dec. £24638.40 and today £26602.40

So in the space of 5 months, the price has jumped by £1964,  effectively it's an 8% increase 😲

With interest rates falling thru the floor, increasing unemployment and the little matter of heavy government borrowing which we'll need to pay back, perhaps Skoda's 8% increase wasn't great timing. It's not just the list price increase tho, Skodas incentive ended and of course changes to 1st year VED rates all played their part, but the bottom line is the total cost of the car has risen way way above inflation.

Wish I could be more positive but I think car sales is about to go thru it's toughest ever period.

Whilst they might get away with these higher prices in the short term due to pent up demand I suspect Skoda and others will have to start doing some serious promotional discounts to shift motors once the stock levels improve.

Skoda are not a volume seller in the UK and people in the UK have a choice of Manufacturers and models to choose from once manufacturers are building and importing cars again.

Many might choose not to buy or lease a new car for quite a while after the lockdown in the UK is lifted, and many might be reconsidering what to get and if SUV's or Crossovers are such a good idea, or cars that can not hold a battery charge for a few weeks without use or just short travel.

Unemployment in the UK might not matter as much as unemployment in the Czech Republic or Bratislava and other Central European countries that are importing cars into the UK.

Loads of newly imported cars are sitting in the UK from the start of Lockdown, also waiting to leave Continental Europe & reach the UK  and are waiting to be first registered and these will be MY20 cars while some might want to wait and get MY21 models when production of those start.

There are going to be bargains available of brand new cars that were built months before a new owner gets them.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to list prices, no one ever pays list.

The offers will come, and as always will vary quarter by quarter...

I'm sure there will be a flood of lease reposessions soon with all the jobs being lost and businesses likely to close
