TPMS sensor in wheel

Featured Replies

Morning all,

I posted previously about refurbish/changing my 19” extremes from silver to black. However pricing this up seems comparable to buying a new set of rims.

My question is, does anybody know how the TPMS sensors in the wheels work, and how easy it would be to transfer from one set of wheels to another?

I have a 2017 FL VRS tdi 4x4 if that helps?

cheers

Does it have sensors in the wheels?

There is no TPMS sensor in the wheels.  The (indirect) TPMS uses the ABS sensor to measure the rotational speed of the wheel, any change of speed is deemed to have been caused by a drop in tyre pressure.

Awesome thanks,

My old car had sensors on the back of the valves so I assumed it was the same. That makes life a lot easier!

Most car manufacturers switched all but their most profitable models from the expensive per unit direct TPMS (with sensors in the wheel) when TPMS became compulsory a few years ago to the cheaper (zero hardware cost per unit) indirect TPMS using the existing ABS sensors and some 'trick' software in the ABS controller.

This is correct. You don't need to worry about TPMS when buying new wheels.

Bear in mind when you're looking at the price to refurb compared to buying a new set of wheels, that whilst a proper diamond cut refurb of a set of Xtremes will be relatively expensive, the wheels themselves are of a fairly decent quality.

I've heard rumours they're forged, no idea if that's true (I doubt it) but they're meant to be fairly light in terms of a 19" OEM wheel - if you replace them with a set of 19" aftermarket wheels that cost £500, you'll likely be putting on a slightly heavier, lower quality wheel. Whether that bothers you is up to you.

As an example, I think I recall reading here that the Xtreme's weigh about 13kg per wheel, for comparison something like a Bola CSR in 19" is 15kg per wheel according to Driftworks webstore and they're the best part of £1000 for a set of 4.

I have to admit this is something that is stopping me from rushing out and buying a set. Not so much the weight more the quality.

Maybe once refurb businesses get back up and running some wiggle room can be found on price as I’m currently dealing with stock automated responses and guesswork over email.
