Drive shaft removal

Featured Replies

Hi all

if I was to remove drivers side shaft from underneath with the car up on ramps disconnecting from gearbox and then removing hub bolt would it be ok to pull out of the hub ?

Knowing the cv joint keeps the bearings tight just wondering if I could get away with it with the wheel and weight still sitting on the bearing ?

cheers

Short answer is no. The weight must be off the wheel before you can even loosen the bolt in the hub. The bearing needs the preload to function properly without excessive wear.

The service manual suggests having a helper press the brake pedal to counter hold the hub while you loosen or tighten the bolt. You will need a torque wrench and a pretty long breaker bar to tighten it back up too.
