Smell of diesel

Featured Replies

There is a strong smell of diesel when idling and after driving from the exhaust of my Octavia vrs mk2, I would like to know if anybody has had the same experience with this and what do I do? I have asked a few people some say it is normal others say it could be a loose injector or an exhaust leak.

What year and engine is it?

Its 2010 and engine is 2 litre tdi

is this a recent issue? Has the car had the 'Emissions Fix?'

It can be normal for the exhaust to smell a bit strong during a DPF regen but otherwise it should be relatively odourless on a CR engine unless you are sucking on the exhaust.

Been like that for a few months. I'm not sure if it had the 'emissions fix'. Hopefully it's nothing major

Are you driving it far enough at the moment? its not trying to do a regen is it? (raised idle, engine fans running when engine switched off etc.)

At the moment not driving far because of lockdown. Have noticed just the raised idle and nothing else. Reckon it needs a good drive somewhere far

Just for clarification, do you know what it smells like when the vehicle is conducting a DPF regen?

Whenever my Octy Scout PD TDi was conducting a regen at idle it smelt more gassy and sooty than of diesel.

My vehicle would also idle at just above 1k revs when conducting a regen.

During my last few months of ownership I was only driving really short distances and it was conducting more active regens as a consequence.

It needs a good run on the motorway for half an hour ideally

Grand I'll take it out and give it a drive on the motorway.

Thanks for the help👍

About 6 months after I bought my vehicle Skoda produced a pamphlet about DPF's how they work and how to look after them.  I tried to Google it,  but found this instead;
