Airbag

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Totally new to this so excuse me if I lack the technical knowledge that most of you have. I have just become the owner of my late fathers 2015 Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI Outdoor and it is going to be a bit of a project to bring it back to its original condition. My dad gave it a tough life with various knocks around the bodywork, but nothing that can't get sorted with a bit of TLC and maybe a visit to a paint shop. First things first I have a puzzle for you. My dad was not able to use pedals, so he had a hand control kit fitted by an expert fitter. In the current lock down situation that fitter is not contactable (furloughed) so I am having to explore other avenues. I need to remove the hand control kit which looks fairly straight forward. What does not look at all straight forward is replacing the airbag fitment that I have shown in the pictures. Firstly I have no idea which side it came from (guessing passenger side)  and  I know that replacing airbag units is almost always best done by an expert (i.e. not me). Any help or advice you could give me would be much appreciated as I am just really starting this process and feel a bit out of my depth. Cheers😉👍

If you google the part number it'll give you a clue where it came from - driver's knees, passenger etc

Your feelings of being ‘out of your depth’ are right. Fix everything else you can then wait till you can get an expert to refit the airbag. You can suffer severe injuries from an exploding airbag - not withstanding the high cost of buying and fitting a replacement bag once you recover!

Thanks Expat....I knew that might be the way to go👍

I had to replace all the airbags on mine that had deployed, from memory that looks like the drivers knee airbag, the textured plastc trim is the giveaway I think.

Just had a feel under my dashboard, it is indeed the drivers knee airbag.

Easy to refit, I expect they have used a shunt resistor in its place, if you disconnect and remove the battery (in case the terminal touches) then you will be safe to reconnect the airbag and it should not throw up any fault codes.

There is a lot of well meaning but ultimately unfounded advice regarding accidental airbag deployment. You are happy enough (and safe) to handle it, place it on an electrical appliance etc, there is no more danger in bolting it in place and plugging in an inert connector.

Thanks for that JR. I thought it was indeed the drivers knee-bag and I knew it might be a straightforward fit. I'm probably going to steer towards safety and get a mechanic who's worked on my other cars to do it, but at least I can tell him what it is and where it came from. I knew this forum would be useful and will be back with more questions at some point. Thanks again 👍

If you pay for short-term (eg 1hr) access to ErWin, you can download all the official workshop manuals.

Somewhere in those manuals will be the "proper" steps to remove/refit the airbag, so that will include all necessary steps to make it safe and carry out the fitting safely.

I recall an hour's access is quite cheap (under a tenner maybe) - it's money very well spent.

Repair manuals, wiring diagrams, self-study guides - they're all there as PDFs.

Once downloaded they're yours to keep, don't need to access ErWin again.
