Engine oil for engine more than 108,000 miles

Featured Replies

Hello all,

My Octavia 07, 1.6 FSI has been running on 5w30 VW 504 oil since last 60,000 miles. I do on average 12,000 miles/year

Some people say that with increased mileage, for more than 100k it is better to use 5w40 oils

I wonder if there is an advantage for older engines to use the VW 504 engine oil with higher viscosity in case of engine done more than 100,000 miles.? Any thoughts...

If the engine has started to use a bit more oil I’d be inclined to use 40 weight oil, but if you have no issues then I’d personally not worry, especially only at 100k miles, as long as the car has been serviced well a 100k engine will be in good order still.

at 150-200k you may consider it to quieten down some engine noise and as said reduce oil usage if it’s increased.

although the 40 weight can reduce oil consumption even if there isn’t any increase in usage, but the slightly thicker oil could hinder mpg ever so slightly.

Thanks.  Some oil consumption has always been there...
