Should I swap?? advice please.

Hi haven't been on for a while but still a Fabia owner and big fan.  Please can anyone offer advice.

I am now 80 years old so that's important.🤣. I own a 2016 Fabia 1.2 Tsi 110 bhp and love it.  It's an SE manual with under 30k on the clock.

 

Some time ago I owned a  MK 2 1.2 tsi DSG in Elegance spec. Of all the cars I've owned that is the one I regret parting with the most, mainly because I love the DSG box which for an old codger like me make driving around town a doddle. But I also loved the armrest, the cruise control and climate control, all things I don't have on my present car.

 

I have a chance to change up to a SEL model, same year 2016 and a  higher mileage at just over 40k which will give me all the bells and whistles I miss.

Only thing is it's the 1,4  Tdi about which I know nothing. I did own a Mk 1 Fabia with a 1.9 PD engine years ago and liked that.

 

Are there any issues with the 1.4 Tdi. It's a main dealer car owned by one of their own staff and fully serviced so any recalls or issues of that nature should be sorted.

 

The biggest attraction is that I can get back into an Auto Fabia without it costing a fortune which suits my situation perfectly.

 

I would love opinions. I know the DSG has it's doubters so please don't go there as I just love it.👍 But any information regarding the 1.4 tdi and any other known issues engine related would be greatly appreciated.

The 1.4TDI Cooling issue thread is pinned at the top of the section.

As you say the Service Campaign action should have been carried out and all should be well.

Is the car coming from the dealership or a trader so that you will have your consumer rights if there should be any issues, or is the deal with it as a 'customers car'?

Thanks for your reply, the car is at a main dealer and is one owner, that owner being one of their own staff. It comes as "Skoda approved" (I know😇) but one would expect any issues should have been attended to. 

Can you tell me is it a strong engine once the cooling issues are sorted?

If it is a 2016 diesel, it will be euro6 emissions spec.  
Unlike the older diesels these come with lot of extra emissions gubbins, and probably a diesel particulate filter.

 

You have to be a bit careful if you are mainly a local town driver.  The emissions equipment can get clogged if you only do short journeys as the engine won’t regenerate (run a cleaning cycle) until it is warmed through (which realistically means journeys of over 30 minutes, more in winter)

 

The other thing to remember is that a cold Diesel engine on short journeys will probably use more fuel than the tsi petrol.  The official mpg tests are done at +25c so not realistic in UK for majority of year.

 

My advice would be if the diesel DSG seems good value at first sight, then you need to consider why it is priced like that compared to the petrol DSG.  It is simply that it will not be suitable as a town runaround

My main worry after looking at many reviews on here and other, would be the DPF.

I don't do a lot of long runs though I do a 200 mile motorway round trip about once every 6 weeks. I have see a lot more problems in the bigger engines related to DPF and wondered if the smaller 3 pot fairs any better on short journeys but I don't see why it should.

If you are only using the car for short runs I would stick with your current car. The ideal situation would be to find a newer 1.2 SEL DSG.

I've booked in to look at the diesel tomorrow but I think after seeing yours and others advice it looks like the diesel is not going to be for me. All I would do is worry about the DPF 😂 Thanks for the  help.

We had a 2016 diesel. It did (and still does) plenty of runs and never had any issues with the DPF. It had several new water pumps though, two under warranty, and one with the new owner just outside (but because it was consistently looked after by the dealer who sold it to us) which was largely paid for by Skoda goodwill.

 

DPFs can be a problem with diesels, but the newer ones are less of a problem as the engines were designed with them in mind rather than being an add-on. So on the one hand you do need to consider if your usage will suit that, but on the other be aware that the naysayers of doom may just be reporting old information that doesn't apply to newer cars. DPFs are not always the disaster some will tell you. 

 

Our 2016 diesel manual achieved over 90MPG (indicated) once. The replacement 1.0 TSi DSG rarely does better than 60MPG indicated but then fuel is cheaper. For your useage will it make a difference? All of these are better than a 2.0 V6 I have than struggles to get over 24MPG (but then I've not had it on the road for a couple of years). 

 

PS: note you are Lincolnshire. We travelled over to Horton's in Lincoln, from Staffordshire, to buy our current one.

Yes. I rang them and arranged to go in and have a look at what they had. I didn't spend much time looking at the diesel after advice on here conformed what I already feared, short trips and modern diesels are not a good idea.

Sadly they didn't have anything remotely in my sub 9k price range except an estate in white which was at another group garage, but I want a hatchback.

I left it they would let me know if anything turns up, apparently they do a lot of motobility so do get a few in. It will have to be a DSG and preferably an SE L if I'm to be interested otherwise I'm happy with what I have.

Thank you I really do appreciate your reply to my post. It also turned out the diesel had more miles on than I thought at 47k I only have 22k on mine, I think I will just wait and see if they get a petrol DSG SE l in either 1.2 or 1.0 guise at a price I feel happy with. As for the DPF I can't say I've heard of a lot of problems so can quite appreciate more modern engines seem to be made to cope better with shorter trips. Thanks again

All Motability cars at the end of lease get returned to Dealerships, but they go to BCA (British Car Auctions) 

If they have Ex Motability cars coming in then they put an offer in and bought them, and not necessarily will have cars they supplied or serviced.

Thanks, that's useful information especially if they ring me and say they've sourced one for me, I can ask the questions and delve into how they came by it. It's good to be armed with such knowledge. I'm not desperate at all, I'm happy sticking with what I have, it was just the possibility of moving up to DSG and SE L spec that excited me in the first place and at a price close to £7k. At least I know the car I have was owned locally and serviced by the dealer.

Yes you can often see the interest drain away once you tell a dealer your specific essentials. As well as wanting a DSG SE L I didn't want a Black car and I don't want a Monte Carlo or any sports type vehicle, simply because my wife cannot get comfortable in sports seats.

They do seem to get the impression I'm being a bit fussy, probably because I am, it is after all my choice.🤣.

But as I say I'll wait for what I want or stay with what I have.

The Diesel has disappeared off their website so it looks like it may be sold.

One thing to bear in mind, at some point the diesel was dropped. Certainly you coudn't get a 2018 diesel in any flavour. But you have to be prepared to travel if you are being picky, like I was.

Theres seems to be a few sub 9k on there that meet what you’re looking for!

Cheers mate, yes I'm watching Auto trader and dealers, I just don't feel like I want to travel too far. If I was desperate I'd consider it but I'll wait a while and see if one comes up local. As I said It was just the attraction of the Diesel being right on my doorstep and being DSG and SE L that made me post for advice.
