That is the fuel filter. Suggest measuring or looking for a number on it to ensure you get the correct part, I seem to remember that 2 were offered at some suppliers to suit my 56 plate 1.9. The black toggles around the rim hold it in and also think the piece like a pair of scissor handle releases the part with pipes opposite each other. The other 2 pipes require the pipe clamps squeezing on the toggles to allow the pipes to be pulled off. My primed by cycling the ignition a few times, but be prepared to raise rev only slightly to keep it running while any air is purged.

If you are servicing yourself, correct oil is essential, plenty of info on here for selecting.

Having a Haynes workshop manual would help you in all areas I'd think, very handy to fall back on if/when needed.   4376 is the one to look out for.

Thanks for the above.

Got my 4x filters today + PD oil.

Ive changed the oil/oil F and pollen and air filters before, just not the diesel filter. It looks quite a good design being super accessible right at the front top of the engine.

Sounds like it will prime ok with a bit cranking, bit like a petrol car would.

Its is the cycling of the ignition that runs the electric fuel pump, not so much the engine cranking, that does the priming.

Oddly cycling the ignition didn’t really feel like it did anything. It started fine on what was probably sitting anyway then ran extremely roughly with the engine juddering badly. In under a minute it was fine again so all good.

On odd occasions with my car (I’ve had it nearly 3 years now) you get/hear a slurping/sucking sound when turning on the ignition. I don’t notice it often at all. Dunno if anyone else’s TDI does this? I assume it is due to pumping.

Has there ever been a more accessible fuel filter fitted to a vehicle? I doubt it!
