Modifying question

Featured Replies

Hi there

Thinking about doing little mods to car but don`t want to affect the warranty

but here`s the question.

I had a subaru turbo the warranty allowed certain mods which didn`t affect warranty like change exhaust, drive shafts go pop warranty still stood but if bought PRODRIVE/ STI PARTS warranty not affected because subaru allowed this.

:D

Why doesn`t skoda make modification parts themselves or allow someone to make parts under licence from skoda like subaru does, so people who buy the cars can modify and the warranty stands plus skoda or company will know what is good and what will cause damage etc, does this seem a good idea as this will make everybody happy or am i barking up the wrong tree.

cheers

(looking forward to cat and fiddle meet sat 29th april)

Don't think Skoda have a big enough following yet.

Even if they sold Skoda sport accesories like the Seat sport ones it woul be a start.

Think it ill be while before theres an Alpina, AMG or Carlson style Skoda.

an R32 engined 4x4 Octavia VRS would be a good start

then an RS4 engined superb.

Then a 2.0T Furbie.

They do in the rest of Europe, just not in the UK.

Raises an interesting question - If I buy a car in the UK and get it modded by a Belgian Skoda dealer, is my warranty valid? It is a pan European warranty afterall :D Or is my warranty contract only valid with a UK dealer / Skoda UK? If they would void on that would they void on work done (servicing / repairs) done by an EU dealer?

Group by on Channel crossings anyone?

I'm sure they do for remaps on the continent but not sure about other mods. I guess factors affecting it would be cost of testing/making the mods and also lack of demand (most Skoda owner's are either cabbies or in the blue-rinse brigade ;))

Chris

I'm up for the Furbie

Thats an interesting point.

That's what I thought :D

If the mod is approved in the other EU countries and is sold as a "Skoda" branded upgrade, you'd be laughing.

Or, if you have a Fabia; Skoda Motorsport produce a load of Group N and some Group A parts for Fabias, all Skoda branded and available from you friendly local dealer. How about some genuine Skoda tarmac rally struts and springs. :D Where do you stand on them?

I emailed them about this sometime ago but had no response. Might ask the dealer about it.

So it you bought a Fabia vRS then gave the motorsport devision X amount of money to convert it to group N spec. Would it have warranty from Skoda UK.

Can see it now. Local Skoda dealer. Your short ratio gearbox gearbox has given up sir. We will replace it under warranty and charge the 4K to Skoda UK

Sorry, was just taking it to extremes. I am interested in the whole EU approach though.....

Would be an interesting question to ask.Are UK cars produced to a different standard to EU ones (ie low tolerances/thresholds). If so - naughty Skoda! Their not? OK that means that a mod approved in the EU is approved here.

Heads I win, tails you lose? ;)

My brain asks:

1) Would a car ever reach production if tested against x no. of potential mods? (More or less what ScoobyChris said.)

2) Why would they? Why not just include typical mods within another version of the same range, as they do already? :ne_nau:

3) If it's unclear at the moment (it seems) as to what's not covered under UK warranties let alone EU aspect (i.e. modded bits or whole warranty invalidated), then surely it mean lawyers getting richer and car costs rising therefrom?

It's academic to me due to speed bumps, but I can dream...

Regards

Mo
