coolant change/how to drain 1.9tdi

Featured Replies

Hi there trying to change coolant on a 1.9tdi 2008 mk2 octavia. Have disconnected bottom rad hose and oil cooler hose but only got around 5 litres out. I had it in my head it took around 7 litres so question is am I missing something or where are the extra 2 litres? Is there a engine block drain or anything else i have missed   I googled it and found reference to suplimentary heating system on the 1.9tdi bxe engine but can't find anything that looks like a drain or extra system. The coolant level was ok when I started so I assume there should be more to come out. Any help or advice welcome

Removing the expansion reservoir cap should help drain faster and potentially alleviate any slow drain airlocks that are holding on to your missing 2 litres.

You could refill and retry if you hadn't already removed the cap.

Depending on what you're doing, if you aren't getting anything from the lowest point in the system you should be fine.

Hi there sorry for not replying sooner. Been doing full service on car including timing belt/water pump. Managed to drain most of coolant from rad etc and found the extra when I removed the water pump. Fisrt engine I have had that doesnt have a coolant drain plug in the block or I just couldn't find it. Cars put back together now and just topping up coolant so should be ok. Will keep an eye on coolant level for the next while just in case there is a hidden airlock that clears itself. Timing belt was pretty bad condition and a cheapo make as well. Cars got a full service history but thats only good if decent parts were fitted at service time,Now fitted with Gates belt kit with pump etc so should be good for a long while.

Thanks for the reply
