DPF regeneration? 1.6tdi

Featured Replies

Have searched the threads but can’t find a similar issue.

My 67 plate Superb has been running, well, superb since I purchased it nearly 2 years ago. I have put about 28000 miles on it and it now sits at just over 41k.

it performs the dpf regeneration fairly regularly(maybe once a week ) and I always noticed it happening immediately after stopping the vehicle.
Last week I came out my house to go to the garage and noticed the noise of what I believe to be regeneration occurring even though the car had been sitting stationary overnight. I though nothing of it at that time but when I came to use the car about an hour later the noise was still present. (I have no idea if it had continued throughout this time). The vehicle wouldn’t start and I had to start via a power pack. The car was running fine for a few days and yesterday I travelled a 240 mile round trip varying speeds (3 hours each way) with no issues. Today I noticed the regeneration noise occurring when I went to my car today for work. It started fine but about 10 miles into my journey the engine warning light came on. On tracking my destination I noticed the regeneration noise occurred as I stopped the vehicle however it continued for about 5 minutes. I attempted to start the vehicle and it refused. My wife, kindly, brought her car to me (as I needed to use a vehicle) and on her way I managed to start the car with no assistance. I left it running and she took it home. She has since informed me it was making a strange noise as if the fans were in when she stopped and again the battery is flat. I’m stuck at work until 11pm and was just wondering if anyone can explain the problem ? I very rarely do short journeys in the car. I have VCDS so will plug it in when I get home or tomorrow. Apologies for the long winded post in advance. Thanks Phil

A regen cannot happen when the engine is not running - what you describe are the cooling fans running.  The fans running can be associated with the regen process as they are kicked into life as things can get hot! An indication of a regen still in progress when you stop can be the fans are running , but the fans shoud stop after a while when things cool down - and in this scenario that would be a failed regeneration.

It sound's like something is not right , possibly a sensor somewhere. I'd suggest getting it to somewhere that can read any codes stored and properly diagnose- although a totally flat battery might not help with this! As well as having issues with the battery being flattened the DPF itself might not be happy now if your car has had a lot of failed regenerations - check your oil level to make sure it's not too high with diesel dilution. I'd suggest getting this properly diagnosed ASAP before things become more expensive.

i know you said you have vcds but always good with diesels to have vag dpf app on your phone and keep a carista obd2 in the car.

you'll then be able to see exactly what's going on with regens, soot levels ash levels etc anytime anywhere.

skoda should have an app like this built into the dash of all there diesel engine cars imo

Thanks for your replies. Just home and removed battery to charge. It’s showing 8.8v. Will hopefully get To the bottom of it tomorrow.

Could your issue be similar to this one?

Issue solved. Apparently was an ecu relay fault. Replaced by Henry’s Glasgow after good old Arnold’s (where I bought the car) couldn’t even look at it until 17th August! They even gave me a brand new T -Roc to run around in for the 4 hours it took them diagnose and remedy the problem. Outstanding service from them in stark contrast to AC who really couldn’t give a toss after you’ve paid the money.
