Why are some turbos noisy?

Featured Replies

As the title suggests really - my turbo is really vocal, yet other Furby vRS's I've driven are quiet in comparison - why? Is mine providing more boost or is it just knackered or what?

It can depend a lot on weather conditions. As long as you don't get failure codes etc I wouldn't worry :)

Depends on the condition of the turbo & how the car has been driven, aswell.

The variable vanes make some noise (I can hear mine adjusting themselves as the boost rises & falls).

Could hear them on my 110 TDI Ibiza as well.

Also, some Fabia's have Garret's & some have KKK's.

Your engine bay's not missing some soundproofing, by any chance...?

TBH on the Fabia there is not a great deal of soundproofing on the firewall anyway - under the bonnet there is a little though admittedly

Not on mine. :D

What kind of noise is it? Is it just the boost whistle? I love that noise. (but mine's not a vRS turbo)

My turbo too is very vocal, even on the standard map.

I get a kind of whirring when driving slowly as you apply the power and ease of etc, like an owl cooing. WHen reaching peak boost I get a kind of chatter too.

But it sounds cool, if it blows up its a chance for an upgrade!

Ive always thought that noise is coming from the transmission

I get squeel when the turbo kicks in. Sounds good, but I hope it doesnt mean its fooked! Ive found the K&N plus bigger air intake causes the turbo to whistle a bit more.

I've read on tdiclub that sound varies from engine to engine and some turbos are very loud and yet some cannot be heard at all. As long as it doesnt effect performance you shouldnt be bothered.
