Idle / low rpm rattle

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I’m glad to eventually sign up to the site, it has been a great resource since I got my Superb a couple of years ago.

i have a Dec 2017 1.6 TDI DSG 7 speed that  has recently started making a chattering noise when idling / low rpm when slowing down. The car drives fine and changes gear etc perfectly, it’s just this noise that is puzzling me. I was wondering if it could possibly be EGR related? I work as a taxi driver and the car predominantly is used in town environment although I do make sure it is driving at higher rpm at least once a day when on the motorway or A roads to help.
I will try and upload a video in which the noise can be heard.
Any help or info would be appreciated.

I'd guess its the (dual mass) flywheel failing ... e.g...

Yep, that sounds a lot like it albeit a bit louder than mine. Only 64k miles on my car but I guess the start stop driving has taken it’s toll on it.

Indeed but ultimately it's crap design on the part of VAG. No DMF should fail at 64 k miles.

My 16 reg estate with 51k miles is booked in for flywheel replacement today 😞

Way too early for my liking

It definitely was the flywheel alright. Very worrying that a genuine part seems to go wrong so quickly I genuinely have a lot of mechanic sympathy and it still happened.

Stop start.

Disable stop start. It’s a horrendous, mechanically unsympathetic disaster of an idea.

I usually do have it turned off unless I know I will be sitting stationary for a while, eg if lights just went red at big junction etc.
more so to stop excessive wear on the starter ( the wear on flywheel didn’t occur to me as I assumed that it would be built to take this )

The amount of starters/alternators/flywheels and even timing chains we replace is ridiculous, and has been for years since this idea was introduced. I know these items get replaced in time anyway, but these are now failing with tiny mileage on them when town driven in particular. Stop start alternator/starter on a Citroen a few months back with 34k and 5yrs old for example was £1900 as dealer only part. These items years ago lasted 80k-100k plus miles, with obviously the odd exception. From a genuine engineering perspective, I would love someone who has more knowledge on the environmental side of things, to talk through the numbers with me. I can’t get my head round how the stop start actually helps in any way. Yes, I get the emissions aspect. But that has to be dwarfed by the factory’s that have had to double or treble output for all these components that are failing twice as early and in a lot of cases even sooner due to the wear the system creates. Anyway, that’s my rant for the morning 😂. Hope you get the motor sorted!!

My dmf was replaced after 30.000 km and 2 years. Start/stop had been disabled since 11.000 km. Ridiculous. Hope the second one lasts longer.

thanks, I will try to not use the function at all now just as a precaution.

How much was this to get changed?
