Changing cars

I think you would struggle to find any car except an old banger with a CD player - some don't even have "normal" USB sockets now (only USB-C).

My 2019 Superb has a CD player in the glove box part of the Columbus package........not that I've ever used it as I prefer to listen to Planet Rock on DAB.

  • I care about statistics because they can provide me with vastly more data on any given subject than my own personal experience. Not much to do with the topic though.

  • A pal of mine bought his wife a Lada after she wrecked so many of their vehicles, eventually he resolved the recurring problem by divorce, cars dont crash themselves.

  • I like to use older cars, from say year 10 of their life and more or less until scrapped. When I do change pre-scrappage it's reason 3,  where desireable = price in hundreds rather than thousands

It should also play music DVD's, I've got Claptons "Slowhand @ 70 Albert Hall Concert" in my ancient Columbus, not to watch the performance but to listen

to the whole concert rather than the cropped CD version.

I'm not a fan of radio music, I prefer to make-up my own compilations + selected albums & load then onto an SD card.

Would you consider a 3 or 4 year old Golf to be "an old banger"?

Our Golfs can play original CD's, burnt at home MP3 CD's, SD cards & USB sticks. The posh one can also handle original & burnt DVD's + there's about 11 Gig of space on the hard drive.

Brand-new cars seem to rely on connecting to a device for music, just another sign of cost-cutting........

My BMW banger plays cd/dvds Well there is a slot for them, either that or its new Postal feature I hadn't realised existed?

Aye as does mine, and allegedly a 20Gb hard drive in there too. But I don't think I've ever put a CD into it.

I don't own a Smartphone either, never have, but I've put all my music onto a memory stick and use that. Works a treat.

I/we use SD cards & USB memory sticks in our Golfs, but the Superb is too old for factory fitted USB sockets.

I change my car's because I get bored usually. Average life of my car's is about 2 years.

Last change was from a Superb II to my Jag XJ L. I had always wanted one and it came up at the right price (turns out it's because it's a bag of spanners!)

I'm now moving into buying cheap cheap cars and turning them into projects. My current 2 cars (excluding the finance Jag) were bought for under £650 for both of them. Obviously they both have needed/need work but it's still better than monthly finance and I feel a sense of pride when I fix something myself.

I/we used to change cars every 2/3 years, but I've owned my Superb 2 since February 2013 & I still can't find anything to replace it.

SWMBO drove it back home yesterday & enjoyed the drive enough to state that we should keep the old barge for a few more years, if only 'cos "it's fun to surprise other drivers". I had a test drive in a '69 plate Volvo S60 last week & 20 minutes later I was happy to give it back to the dealer.

At £27k it was a good price, & a nicely-made car but the "fun factor" is missing.

As for cheap cars as projects, I do "get it" but I'm too old to want waste my last years rebuilding a car. Been there, done that, etc...
