I wouldn't mind some HID living in North Wales, but having had a look at the engine bay this morning I can't help getting worried about where would I fit the ballast ( is there one or two ballast? ) I have a Carbonio CAI in the bay too so that doesn't help matters.

Cars a Octavia vRS.

Any thoughts or expirience would be great.

There is two ballasts, as for fitting in an Octy i'm afraid i could not tell you.

Matt

God but there is some rubbish in here, answers to some questions as follows

There is no massive startup surge, these are combined igniter and ballast units and actually draw less current than the standard halogens 35w as against 55w for standard bulbs

Lighting improvement is around 300% better than standard

If installed from new the law requires washers and self levelling suspension on the rear,if retro installed non of these items are required at the moment so NO MOT issues OK

If installed as per the instructions which even my dog can follow you should have no issues with bulb out warning lights

Any idiot can fit these, they are as they say, plug and play

combined ballast and igniter unit can be fitted anywhere adjacent to the lights that is convenient.

Only other thing to add as per my posting on the group buy is i reckon these are expensive, please look at my comments on the group buy posting,i also reckon the ones i suggest are better quality but that is only my opinion!!

One more thing go for 6000k Max for normal road use as this is the nearest to natural daylight and contary to popular opinion the higher the K number it does not mean the better the light ,in fact the complete opposite is true.

Hope this posting answers some questions and gives the benefit of my experience on this lighting system,my advice is these lights are as important from a safety point if view as ABS and should be standard fitement on all cars and not only available as an extra and an expensive one at that. When o ordered my Fabia vRS the dealer told me he could get one with a cd changer immediatley but if i wanted Xenons i would have to wait 12 weeks.to my mind the world has gone bloody stark staring raving mad.

Any way hope this helps

Easy fella! Thanks for posting though :)

Steve

Hi,for anyone who read my posting in the Fabia forum,i actually gave the wrong item number for the HID conversion kit that sells for £94.98 inc p&p i would reccomend this set i have already got one installed and am just about to purchase another for a friend, any way the best way to find them is to do a search for the seller as he has other kits listed so just search for xenon.lights.direct and you should locate the seller easily.

Just to answer a couple of points that have come up.

These kits give you exactly the same lighting as factory fitted xenons,i have heard say that the kit is actually better than the factory fit item but i cant comment as i have no experience of the standard item as i wasnt prepared to wait 12 weeks for delivery.

These are plug and play ie.you remove the existing bulbs and these items plug in to the existing harness, all you have to do is position the ballast and zip tie it secure. There is NO solderingNO cutting of existing harness just plug in locate ballast and go.

I would reccomend that headlamp alignement is checked after fitting.

Bi xenons, yes you can have these if you want but you will need to buy two kits one for dipped beam and one for high beam with the appropriate bulb for each.

Some expensive cars have bi xenons fitted as standard but you dont really need them, all you need is to change your dipped beam only as the mains are additional anyway ie,your dipped xenons will also be on when you put your main beam on,hope you understand this.Basically only change the dipped beam bulb as to do the main as well is a waste of money

All of these kits are supplied with the bulbs

The bulbs do not have a filament like a normal bulb, instead they are filled with a gas and have an electrode, the ballast and igniter supply a high voltage to the electrode and strike an arc in the gas filled envelope (the bulb) and this is what produces the light.

Because there is no filament the bulbs themselves should reasonably be expected to last the life of the car,you would be very unlucky to have to replace a bulb but of course it does happen but only very ocassionally

As with all high temperature bulbs including the standard halogens already fitted to most cars remember DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS ENVELOPE OF THE BULB WITH YOUR FINGERS,if you do this will cause a hot spot and premature faliure, always handle the bulbs with there protective foam overcoat on so as to avoid this.if you do happen to touch one then clean it thoroughly with white spirit to remove all trace of finger grease.

I think that is about it now, hope all this drivel is of help to someone and if you do take the plunge please let me know what you think when you have them installed at least then i will know it has helped someone

Cheers

Pete

I had 6000k's in my Corsa and the light was very white with such a small amount of blue it's not worth mentioning (but it was there).

IMO you're just asking for trouble if you go for any higher temperature bulbs as they'll just attract unwanted attention.

I know

The factory fitted low-beam is a HID projector kit. You can't reproduce this by fitting an aftermarket HID conversion based on a H1 or H7 bulb as the optics are different.

If you haven't got HIDs and want the simplest HID solution, these aftermarket kits seem to be the way to go, as retrofitting the factory HID may involve all sorts of elec-trickery with self-levellers etc.

...Or you could hack your headlights so you can fit a bi-xenon projector.

What about fitting aftermarket HID's with aftermarket projector-style headlamps?
