Has anyone fitted an aftermarket HID kit to a Fabia? (they do have H4 main beam don't they?)

I had a kit in my Corsa and they were phenominal compared to the traditional Halogen bulb variety, so wouldn't mind getting another set for the Fabia.

Forgive the question, but exactly how do these 'HID' systems work? I presume it's a half-way house between std halogen and a Xenon system? But how does it produce increased brightness over halogen? Is it gas and electric current based, similar to Xenon?

Did you have much interest in the kits Matt?

It is a full Xenon system like you would find from the factory. They come with a ballast/ignitor and they just plug straight into the existing wiring.

Interest was limited, as there was some slight issues with my posting the advert straight up without fully reading the rules. Sold a few sets to friends and on other forums. Can still get them if the interest is there. If you compare the price to other retailers it is very very competitive.

Hope this answers the question, any further ones, let me know.

Regards

Matt

If the same kit fits the Octy and they are reasonable to fit myself then id be up for a kit.

Im guessing that they would have to be adjusted when fitted as well so that you dont blind other?

Cheers for that Matt (the first Matt ;)) - didn't realise they used exactly the same system as Xenons. Do they go straight on a whole range of makes/models, or are they more customised, i.e. a 9N 2002 Polo?

Would also be interested in how taxing fitting them is. I'm also wondering how the system copes with the massive startup power needed for these types of systems, but still utilising the existing wiring? Is there any risk to the existing loom and associated wiring?

Thanks,

Steve

They would fit the Octy as they just come in bulb shape and colour temps. So for the Fabia it is just a H7 bulb and whichever colour temp you require. They do not come in model specific fittings, just the bulb shape.

As for fitting them it is just a case of plugging them into the existing wiring and putting the bulbs in. As for the drain on the start up, i have not heard any problems with it.

Think that answers all the questions, if not please let me know.

Matt

Is there a link or webpage where the kit is listed and what colour temps are available, and the differences between them?

Thanks,

Steve

Have a look on ebay, most of the sellers show a load of the different colour temps. Then come back here and buy from Matt :D

The kit I had was stupidly straightforward to fit - took no more than 10 minutes to flood my garage with crisp white light and put a big grin on my face.

I went for approx 6500k bulbs in the end rather than any blue/purple light.

Obviously once you start getting bluer, you start getting much more acquainted with your local bobby!

And here is a pic of the actual product: (sorry about the quality, missus had the digi cam)

Anyone know off hand where you would plug these into on any Skoda (Octy if you want to choose:P)

  • Unplug the wiring from the back of your halogen bulb and remove bulb
  • Connect ballast/igniter to existing headlamp wires and secure ballast in the engine bay with sticky pads or self tappers
  • Plug in HID bulb to ballast loom and locate bulb into headlamp
  • Turn on your lights

you have PM

Hmmm think it might be time to get the wallet out soon.

Does the kit come with any bulbs or do we have to source these ourselves?

Cheers

:bump: for this - can you still get them? Is £145 the absolute best price available? PM if necessary.

I've had a look about, I'd be after the H7 setup, same as the Fabia. I've seen the HID kits about for quite a bit less, but having said that, I can't make a judgement on the quality. But I haven't seen the kit you can source for real either ;)

Cheers,

Steve

Do these kits include the bulbs

I'm sure there is a guy advertising on SCN for £125 IIRC Steve.

Cheers Stu, I was just about to go off SCN searching, so thanks for the update :D

Will take a look now...

Steve

Were they what you are looking for Steve?

Spot on Stu - that £110 kit looks great. I'm just pondering over the legalities now, as after having a Xenon setup on the Polo, I really want them again!

Does anyone know, if you retrofit them, do you bypass the requirement for headlamp washers and auto levelling, as required on new vehicles rolling out of the factory with Xenon setups? Could do with seeing the offical regs really. Don't want to be messing about with this each year at MoT time!

I could potentially look at trying to match that price for H7 kits, haven't had contact with my supplier for a little while so may be able to go even cheaper. To confirm with people, they do come with all the bulbs and ballasts necessary to get you going. As someone previously mentioned they are dead easy to fit and really help driving at night. Any questions or queries feel free to PM me.

Matt

Wardy - re. the law, I think technically you are supposed to have the whole washers and levelling but as they're always slow to catch onto retrofit items you won't have any problems for the forseeable.

At MOT time, as long as the beam is within guidelines (dictated by the reflector and not the bulb type) then you'll be fine.

Joff- thanks for the info.

Steve

ALSO, should you absolutely have to change them back over for the MOT or any other reason, if you can keep the ballast/igniter fitted all you need to do is remove the HID bulb, unplug the ballast from the factory loom and refit a halogen bulb and connect the wiring.

That's the beauty of these HID kits - there's no cutting or rewiring, they're just plug and play :)
