Can anyone shed some light on this,  set off to work and about 8 mile into the mostly motorway drive doing 70 the oil can light comes on with a beep.

Solid Amber.

 

Oil level is max 

Coolant is fine and no mixing of either.

No smoke or strange noises but a loss of power.

 

Scanned with vcds and couldn't find any faults?

 

Only way I got rid of the light was to unplug the battery.

 

The light is no longer on.  I have used my other car for work tonight just incase and also because in the same trip to work one of the ARB drop links popped......

Dunno for sure but if the oil level is good I'd suspect a bunged up oil pickup, which is a sump off job to confirm and cure if I'm right.
