Unknown noise.

Featured Replies

So more a “throw my hands in the air” post than anything. But some suggestions would be good.

Bought a 2014 Superb Outdoor 60k km on it, about a month ago from a VW dealer. Drove it for 2000km and took it back for some repairs under Statutory warranty. Aircon, not working and a guess at probably wheel bearings - grinding under load when going round corners and a woom-woom-woom noise when over 100kph.

VW told me, nothing wrong with AC, and no play in bearings. I explained a bit more and insisted neither were OK.

VW decided to give it to a Skoda workshop.

Skoda workshop - AC  requires new temp sensor, new gate motor and a new fan.

Me -seems about right. What about the bearings?

Skoda workshop - no play in bearing, but we had it up on the hoist and can hear the noise, so we’ve taken a recording and sent it to Skoda

Me - riiiight. Pretty sure it’s the bearings.

Skoda workshop - we don’t think so, there is no play.
Me - did you take it for a drive?

Skoda workshop - no, we put it on the hoist and could hear the noise

Me - Ok then.

2 weeks have now passed. AC is fixed, but I don’t want the car back until the noise is fixed.

Check the rear tyres for 'saw toothing' if everyone is saying bearings are OK.

Just run your fingers over the outer/inner edges

New tyres, should have mentioned that and Skoda could hear the noise while on the hoist.
as of yesterday they were going to change the wheels to see if it made a difference. Don’t what else they are doing. I have a loaner, so not really put out, would just rather have the car I bought

current diagnosis - 3 wheels slightly buckled!

Stupid 40 profile tyres.

Guessing it has been over one large pot holes!

New wheels from the dealer under statutory warranty. I settled on some after market PDW Corsa rims, rather than waste time.

The difference is immense, so much less  overall road noise and the

rhythmic woom-woom-woom is gone.

Skoda workshop was correct in their diagnosis.
