Changing front pads on a y-reg Octavia

Featured Replies

The brake warning lights come on, on my 2.0L y-reg Octavia and I have bought new pads to replace them myself.

I replaced the rear pads ok but I can't get the front calipar apart to get the old pads out and the new pads in.

It looks like there's 2 hex bolts that need to be undone to take it apart, but a 6mm hex key is two small and an 8mm is too big. Is it really a 7mm key i need? Seems a weird size. Or is it something even more irritating like a 5 sided pent key i need? Or am I just completely wrong??!!

Thanks in advance,

Donald

IIRC it is a 7mm

Not sure on the size but it is a standard hex key - so looks like it will be 7mm. I remember having to buy one for my Astra as it wasnt included in my socket set - the same key fits the Octavia.

A 7mm allen key does indeed fit. Mine freed ok with a decent allen key, which I already had, i.e. I didn't have to buy a socket attachment.

The carrier bolts don't fit any of my sockets though, the 11/16" almost fits so I'm guessing an 18mm is required.

if you're likely to do work on a car I can recommend the Halfords pro toolkit range.... got a socket set for my birthday a few years ago, got all the sockets I could ever need (bar 6 sided impact ones which I had to buy), and spanners, allen keys etc etc.

Also got a set of swivel head ratchet spanners..

Always worth spending money and getting yourself kitted up with tools.

Thanks for that, I have one of the good Halfords Socket sets, as well as a great free set I got from somewhere thats got proper six sided sockets from 12mm up to 24 rather than star ones, so you don't knacker stiff nuts (ooeer!) and bolts. Also have loads of bicycle tools which have loads of hex keys, just no 7mm ones.

Thought it would be a weird size, just wanted to check before I went wild buying tools.

Thanks again.

Job done. 7mm hex key was just the ticket. Thanks for the help.
