Are third party warranties any good for used cars?

Featured Replies

My mum just in the process of buying a used car (2018 plate Seat, 15k miles) and the inevitable question about warranty had arisen - the Seat garage have quoted £349 for an RAC Platinum warranty. Has anyone any experience of getting a warranty for a use car? I've never used one myself and poking around online seems to reveal a whole heap of horror stories about warranty companies being very adept at not paying out when a claim is made. I realise it's all about reading the small print, but just wondering if anyone has used one of these and has any advice on whether it's better to just keep the money that would be spent on the premium and put it towards any maintenance required?

Thanks

Hi Slice, as you say, read the small print very carefully! My wife once bought a car from a nation-wide used vehicle retailer, their name starts with a W! We somewhat reluctantly allowed ourselves to be convinced that a 3rd party warranty would be a good idea. Very soon started having overheating issues/coolant loss, which, after independent inspection, turned out to warped cylinder head! The original seller claimed another cause and refused cover! Eventually got reimbursed an extremely hard-fought 50% of repair costs after starting legal action.

Thanks Warrior...that very much fits with the vast majority of experience and reviews that I've read about such warranties.

Think I'm going to leave it. Mum doesn't do a huge mileage and there's actually the remainder of the manufacturers warranty until March which should cover for anything serious until then.
