Boot won't open

Featured Replies

My story continues! I fixed one major leak, then found out two minor ones... But I can't open my boot now! Hence the thread...

I have a '02 hatchback. Today I can't open the boot the normal way!

I do not know whether the "locking mechanism" isn't working, or whether the "opening mechanism" isn't working, or whether a fuse has gone.

I can and have opened the boot from the inside by taking off the plastic rectangle. Everything looks fine, so it's gotta be something electrical?

Could the fuse have blown? If so, any ideas which one it is? That would be the easiest fix.

What else could it be?

Is your boot lock key or button remote operated?

I've never replaced the battery in my key or used the buttons, but I would guess it would unlock the boot using the button on the key (only got lock/unlock buttons).

Usually I just turn the key in the driver's door and it would unlock the boot too.

When I turn the key in the boot to unlock, I can hear the unlocking sounds for the doors but not the boot at the moment, if it helps.

Possible that the mech has gone on the boot lock. Open it up and I spec it all and double check the wiring. Boot should unlock with remote locking and with the key in the door and finally with the button on the drivers door.

The locking mechanism was the problem. Now I don't know what caused the problem, so it might jam again, but I will say what I did which seems to have fixed it.

There's a little white box fixed *on to the side* of the opening mechanism which is fixed on by two posi screws. You can open this one up by unscrewing both screws, and then prising it open using a screwdriver. Some care needed as it is snapped shut with plastic tabs.

Inside the white box is a motor, which makes a noise when it turns (for me it wasn't making the noise, so we knew it wasn't working). When the motor turns, it turns a white plastic cog which either pulls out or pushes in a pole. This is what unlocks/locks the door. When it's locked the pole is fully out, when it's unlocked the pole is fully in.

Mine was jammed fully out. I turned the cog back and forth. I pulled/pushed the pole back and forth. Then put it in the fully in position, properly unlocked.

Put everything back together. Boot door works as good as new, better than it did before!

(If anyone encounters any other problems with the boot lock, you can also take off the big white plastic cover in the middle. This white plastic cover is fixed on by two tabs either side. You can prise it off with a screwdriver. Once this is off you can even take out the whole door lock by unscrewing the T30 and T40(maybe bigger) screws too. I broke a T40 short bit undoing these, so either take care or don't use cheap bits!)
