Suggest a head unit for under

Featured Replies

I think ym head unit may be screwed :( however, we're still not certain if we'll keep the Octy so I dont want to spend a lot of money.

Going to Cornwall in June and a few motorway trips before the Z comes will make the current unit unbearable.

So I'm looking for:

CD head unit with MP3 playback

Green illumination would be nice

Black fascia would be nice

Under

have a quick search, plenty of mp3 units for under £100

much of a muchness i think really phil at that price.

i got a sony CDX - GT300 payed 120 for it from halfords

mp3

changer compatible

rds /eon

infra red remote

cds

sub out (control thingy/volume)

pre amps

4 x 50watt

atrack cd

ipod in

front aux

and loads of stuff

I've no idea how good/bad they are but look at H&B h/us. Some will play USB pendrives comtaining MP3s :)

If you want CD changer compat. then try - http://www.add-a-cdchanger.co.uk/

Good luck with the search.

changer compatible

With the VAG changer? Or does it just have the ability to control a Sony unit?

Will I be able to retain the ability to keep the head unit on until I pull the ignition key out ?

And if it were my money, I'd be getting that Alpine...

Which of course gives you the ability to keep the head unit on until you pull the ignition key out! ;)

How certain are we that it'll drive the OEM CD changer?

The Alpine  not at all... but then who needs a disc changer when you have mp3 discs...

(not saying it wont work, I just dont know...)

I think Alpine have developed an interface which will work with the OEM CD changer - can't remember the details...might be worth asking andy_ccr if he's still about on here?

Alpine do an interface to use the OEM head unit with their changer but not sure about the other way around (already googled and found nothing)

How about speed variable volume ? Or is that too much to ask ?

Now read that SKoda aerials have a powered signal booster that wont be powered with another head unit - is this likeley to cause a drop in FM strength ?

Think you already know the answer to that one... surely you wouldn't want another hifi that turns it's self up and down.. ;)

Moon on a stick, etc.

Don't think it's got it...you probably won't need it though - I can set mine at a "motorway suitable" volume and because it's not distorting it's not painful to listen to at low speeds.

The OEM unit powers a FM signal booster in the aerial. With the Alpine I wont have the booster - will I notice?

You can buy the amplifier for about a tenner IIRC - I didn't bother, can pick up FM broadcasts with a strong signal, but I don't listen to the radio so haven't tested it extensively...

my old panansonic was brilliant - how ever you shouldnt notice that much diffence you can get adaptors to plug onto the skoda cd changer to power from your hu

I bought a seperate inline booster when I bought my Alpine, I pick up radio station in a bout 5 counties now  it was less than a tenner!

It's a bit bulky and I have trouble sliding my HU all the way back, but that's probably becuase I have numerous other things behind there for my amp, ipod and whatnot...

theres some room if you can push it right back down behind the tray under the hu! but its getting it there that kills your knuckles:(

not sure.....what make is the changer?

its a skoda changer leon and you won't be able to use it with any aftermarket stereo.

some companies make it possible to use after market changers with oem headunits but not the othe way round i don't think.

What is the power supply ot the in arial booster.

Most head units provide a power out for a motorized arial, so if it's the same power requirements/voltage then you should be able to power the thing off this I would have thought :)
